Petition For Cable and Broadband Internet Access in Ashmore Subdivision, Duluth, GA, 30097
From The Residents of Ashmore Subdivision,
Duluth, GA, 30097-5272.
Ashmore subdivision was constructed in 2006-2007 and comprises of 91 single family homes.
AT&T is the only domestic high speed Internet provider in the Ashmore subdivision. We believe AT&T's service here is poor with speeds maxing out at 3.0 MBps, moreover AT&T is not provisioning any new DSL connections for the newer residents.
Also, there is no cable service in the subdivision and almost all of the residents have to rely on satellite programming providers such as Dish Network and DirecTV.
In 2011, one of the residents (Mr. Desai) got in touch with an organization called Georgia Cable Association (www.gacable.com). GCA represents the cable industry to policymakers at the state and federal level. Mr. Desai was told that GCA would initiate inquiries with both Comcast and Charter and have them do a site survey for cable feasibility in Ashmore. Comcast came back and said that they were not franchised to service Ashmore, but Charter said they were the franchise with Ashmore in their area, Charter came out and surveyed the subdivision and later ruled that it was not economical for them to lay cable here. Since we are the end of the road for Charter they did not want to invest in laying cable in Ashmore.
One other resident (Mr. Mishra) also got in touch with Congressman Rob Woodall and his telecom policy advisor Mr. Nick Myers with no positive outcome.
Some of the other residents have been petitioning ATT for their fiber Uverse service, AT&T has been ignoring all such petitions and requests.
We don't understand how this is not a monopoly over ISP's and TV programming providers in the area and would like the County work with Telecom and Cable providers on our behalf. We are highly interested to work with any provider that will offer cable service and true broadband internet connectivity which is better than the available and much slower DSL plans from AT&T. We also feel that changes should be made at the appropriate local, state and federal levels to ensure that cable and broadband services are rolled out in a fair and equitable manner.
