Petition for KSF to award a Green Ribbon for Best Mold
One of my favorite unofficial Kentucky State Fair traditions is visiting the culinary department on the last day of the Fair to see what havoc nature has wrought on all the beautiful award-winning cakes, pies, and other baked goods. That's right, we come for the real star of the show... the MOLD.
My wife and I like to choose our own Blue Ribbon winner, but obviously because of the nature of what's being judged, we refer to this prize as the Green Ribbon. I have spoken with countless other Kentuckians who do the same thing every year, with their own twists, rules, and traditions.
Over the past couple years, the culinary department has begun removing items from the display cases as they begin to acquire mold, which not only removes exhibitions that deserve to be displayed, it removes a big piece of the fun that is the Kentucky State Fair. It removes a bit of tradition that so many families love.
So to protect this tradition, we ask that the Kentucky State Fair make it an official category, with a prize to be awarded on the last day of the Fair: The Green Ribbon.
Here's how it could look: as food gets moldy, it is moved to the Mold Zone (a display case dedicated to moldy items). On the final day of the fair, or perhaps the penultimate day, a prominent elected official (let's be real, it's gonna be the Governor) would present the Green Ribbon for Best Mold.
This would make this tradition official, so that all those who love it could enjoy it together. It would also increase attendance on the last weekend of the Fair. This is a win-win.
At a time when the world becomes a bit more homogenized every day, we should hang on to weirdness where we can. This is free, and it's fun.

Why is this important?
The world is slowly becoming more boring. We've retracted into our own little algorithms and echo chambers. We spend less time around people, and more time glued to our phones. The Kentucky State Fair is an amazing third space where people of all walks of life interact with one another. Why not give people another fun tradition to share with one another?
