Petition to enact a system of Presumed Consent of Organ Donation

Change the current organ donation system to a presumed consent or “opt-out” program instead of the current “opt-in” program in order to create a larger number of available organs and save lives while still allowing people who wish to not become donors to “opt-out” of donating simply by visiting a website or registering as a non-donor with their local DMV or hospital.

Why is this important?

There are currently over 113,000 people waiting for an organ transplant.

Only 28,463 transplants occurred in 2009 while 105, 567 waited for a transplant that year.

Over 2.5 million people died in the U.S. in 2007, imagine if they were all registered organ donors.

By enacting a presumed consent program, the organ shortage would be eliminated and millions of lives would be saved.
