Pets:The abandoned military dependents

Tell President Obama that the US military must take responsibility for taking care of the abandoned US military dependents: pets. Pets provide invaluable comfort to military peronnel and their families in times of separation, when parents and spouses are away fighting wars. Adandonment should be viewed as unthinkable. American-run organizations on all bases need to be established to oversee procedures for spaying, neutering and feeding these adbandoned pets, as well as educate personnel about the responsbilities entailed in caring for a pet. The US government should pay for transport of 2 pets per sponsor, and authorize regulations for pet ownership. It is time for the Month of the Military Pet!

Why is this important?

In US military installations throughout the US and the world, animals are routinely abandoned when military personnel move to another base. As a result, abandoned pets live in disease and misery, fall victim to abuse, and are rounded up and killed inhumanely. It falls on compassionate local nationals whose salaries are significantly lower than military personnel to pay for spaying, neutering, and feeding the animals. It is time for the US government to pay for transport of animals of military personnel and to establish American-run base organizations that provide care for these animals, as well as educate personnel about responbilities of having a pet.
