Request for a Town Hall with NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani on Affordability at Rochdale Village

Rochdale Village, Mitchell-Lama Cooperative community, in Jamaica, Queens (NYC)
Subject:
Urgent Request:

Organize a Town Hall for Rochdale Village residents to meet directly with NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani as soon as possible.

Dear NYC Councilmember-elect
Ty Hankerson,

We hope you are well. Congratulations on your recent election as our City Council member representing the 28th NYC Council district. We are reaching out to you to urgently request your assistance in organizing a Town Hall with NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani for Rochdale Village residents as soon as possible.

As you know our community has several pressing concerns—maintaining housing affordability, public safety, infrastructure, and quality-of-life issues—that require direct engagement with the incoming administration. Our residents are eager for the opportunity to speak with Mayor-elect Mamdani and understand his plans for our neighborhood. We are especially interested in how the laser focus of his campaign on the affordability crisis in NYC connects to the financial crisis that we are facing here at Rochdale Village.

Your leadership and coordination with his transition team would be invaluable in bringing this important forum to our community.

Thank you for your continued support and for helping ensure Rochdale Village is heard.

Why is this important?

As Zohran Mamdani spoke to directly to at the event you recently held with him, the more than 31% Carrying charge increases imposed this November at Rochdale Village pose an immediate threat of mass eviction. Such drastic hikes could permanently destabilize our historic Mitchell-Lama community, pushing thousands—especially our most vulnerable neighbors—toward homelessness or out of New York City altogether.

We cannot allow this crisis to unfold.
And no elected leader can meaningfully say that they are committed to expanding affordable housing city-wide if they do not take immediate action with whatever power they have to stop the 2nd largest affordable housing community in NY State from drowning in a debt crisis that our residents played no role in creating.
