President Obama: Bring All The Democrats Home for LGBT Workplace Fairness

The Democratic Party's national platform reads: "We support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) because people should not be fired based on their sexual orientation or gender identity." President Obama has repeatedly stated his support for ENDA and his desire to see Congress pass this bill. With the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster well within reach, the hurdle of uncommitted Democrats remains. We call on President Obama to do what it takes in his power as party leader to bring Senators Mark Pryor (D-AK), Joe Manchin (D-WV), and Bill Nelson (D-FL) to support the freedom of all Americans to work, and pass the ENDA.

Why is this important?

The Employment Non-Discrimination Act passed a historic milestone in July, garnering all Democrats and three Republican votes to pass from the Senate Judiciary committee to the floor in a 15-7 vote. Majority Leader Senator Harry Reid is committed to putting the legislation on the floor. With the bill poised to face the floor, there remain but three uncommitted Democrats, Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Sen. BIll Nelson of Florida and Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia. The time is now for these Democrats to join their colleagues across the aisle and take a strong stand in support of Federal legislation affirming all Americans deserve the Freedom to Work, no matter who they are, or who they love.
