President Obama: MAKE OUR STREETS SAFE FOR CHILDREN

Every day, I read scary things in the newspaper. Today, I read that "A hammer-wielding madman — dressed in a suit and tie — bashed in the skull of a Spanish tourist who was sitting quietly with his wife on a bench in City Hall Park yesterday".

We cannot allow this kind of tragedy to continue. Our children are at stake here. Since the weapon ban in Chicago, NYC, & LA have been so effective in keeping those cities' crime rates well below national average, I propose that we extend them to one of the most dangerous weapons of all, hammers.

Did you know, that as the law stands, there are huge loopholes that allow any common person to walk into a common big box retail store and walk out THE SAME DAY with a hammer? They don't even have to show ID! How can we trace that hammer back to the store that sold it in the NYC case? That store owner is an accomplice to attempted murder, and we have no idea who he is. I fear for my children, Mr President.

I know what you're thinking. Lots of people use hammers for things that are, well,... constructive. That's just what they want you to think. Hobbyists that use hammers can be limited to smaller hammers. They don't need such large hammers. I propose a limitation of 8 oz. on hammers sold to citizens. The only way to buy larger hammers is with special tactical and safety training. I'd only trust police officers and TSA agents, since they are dedicated only to protecting me, even if it's from myself.

While we're at it, some of the stores that sell hammers go well past standard hammers. There are "sledge" hammers, "drywall" hammers, pneumatic collated hammers, actuated nailers, and so on. The list goes on!

What possible use is there for a sledgehammer? That's 8 lbs. of weight stacked on an end of a stick! Doesn't that sound frightening? What if that person in NYC had been armed with one of those?

Did you know what actuated nailers even existed? They take special nails, and a special bullet. When activated, they fire the bullet and it fires the nail out. The nail is moving so rapidly, it could pierce concrete and metal. Those materials are much stronger than kevlar, what we use to protect our police officers. These armor penetrating hammers should be banned and the makers of these death weapons should be in prison.

Have you seen the Pnuematic collated nailers? These things can accept a drum magazine! If that doesn't scare you, maybe this will: the nails are even sold in strips of 30. You can put 30 nails into a target as rapidly as you can touch it 30 times. Then, you spend 3 seconds dropping a new strip of 30 in and you can do it again. Here's the best part... the box comes with 6000 nails! People, every day, buy multiple boxes. What are they doing with all these nails? I have no doubt they are stocking up to attack us.

The fix is easy. On top of banning sales of any hammer over 8 oz. to a citizen, we should also limit the nail size. Anything above a 3d is too dangerous for common citizens to have. The citizens can still attach things with 3d nails, if that's their hobby or sport. But those nails, of 3d or lower, should be limited to boxes of 2. Only two nails to a box. And we should require they be put in a database. Also, anyone that owns a nailgun or hammer should be put in a database.

I have made this petition, so you can see how many of us support this. This should be the next most important issue, depending on what the Kardashians are doing this week, and if no one interesting is competing in the Olympics.

Good day.

Why is this important?
