To: President Donald Trump
President Obama, make amending the Constitution a top priority
Dear President Obama: In your second term, we urge you to make amending the Constitution to overturn the Citizens United decision a top priority.
Why is this important?
President Obama has criticized the Citizens United decision and said a constitutional amendment to overrule it may be necessary. (see http://bit.ly/Ub9cxd )
But will he fight for it? The answer may be up to us.
In his victory speech, President Obama said to Americans that the election...
"doesn’t mean your work is done. The role of citizens in our democracy does not end with your vote. America’s never been about what can be done for us. It’s about what can be done by us together through the hard and frustrating, but necessary work of self-government."
Now, while the memory of $6 billion spent on the election -- and of the ugly, divisive ads that money bought -- is still fresh, is the moment for us to urge President Obama to lead on this issue.
Imagine how much better that money could have been spent. And imagine how much stronger America would be.
