President Obama: Protect the Grand Canyon from toxic mining
I urge you to protect the Grand Canyon from nearby uranium mining by designating the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument. Doing so will permanently protect this sacred place for generations to come and set a precedent for protecting other special places across the country from reckless threats.
Why is this important?
America designated the Grand Canyon as a national park nearly 100 years ago. Unfortunately, the land surrounding the canyon was left out of the park and unprotected. Now, mining companies are pushing to start digging for uranium on that land.
This summer, the National Park Service celebrates 100 years of land conservation. There is no better time to renew our commitment to protecting the best of America.
That's why we're calling on President Obama to permanently protect the Grand Canyon from this toxic mining by declaring a new national monument before he leaves office.
