There should be legislation that prohibits a company from firing or prevents it from hiring an individual because of a crime that was committed over 20 years ago. One's record should not be cleared, but it should not be used to discredit one's employability.
Why is this important?
I was working for the USPS service and was terminated due to my record that's older than 25 years.
