Presidente Ollanta Humala and Peruvian Contress: Stop seismic oil exploration and pass the Animal...
In spring 2012, over 800 dead dolphins washed up on the Peruvian coast. Necropsies revealed a condition known as the "bends", suggesting that the animals suffered from acute acoustic impacts-loud noises that sound like exploding dynamite. Several companies are exploring for oil and using these deafening blasts. Also, the tissues revealed high levels of toxins. Thousands of tons of cancer causing chemicals and sewage enter the Peruvian Pacific every year, causing massive sickness and death in marine animals. Scientists believe that this spring die-off was caused by a combination of acoustic impacts and chronic exposure to pollution. Please sign this letter to the Peruvian government calling for a cessation of seismic exploration in Peruvian waters and for the passing of the Animal Welfare and Protection Law 4248 archived in the Peruvian Congress that would protect marine life from human impact that includes seismic activity, pollution and illegal hunting.
Why is this important?
Seismic activity and pollution is threatening marine life in the South Pacific ocean. Every year, hundreds of marine mammals wash up on Peruvian shores, and over 80% of these animals are killed as a direct result of human impacts. The health of our oceans is at stake, and the Peruvian Congress and Presidente Humala have the authority to stop seismic testing in Peruvian waters and te pass the archived Animal Welfare act, which will provide protections for marine animals in Peru..
