Presidential Commission on Student Debt
Some members of Congress have endorsed "debt-free college," but there will be much political opposition without a plan that fairly addresses all sides -- rising college costs, state funding for public universities, Federal grants to low-income students, and parents' ability to pay. We petition the President to appoint a commission of objective experts to formulate a fair plan for sustainable financing of higher education without student debt.
Why is this important?
As college costs rose, and Federal and state support as well as parents' incomes failed to keep up, it was easy to shift University, state, Federal, and family budget deficits onto students in the form of loans. Student debt has been placed upon this generation without a national debate. We need a fair plan that all can endorse for how to return to funding higher education without student debt.
