To: President Donald Trump
Protect Southern New Mexico Lands
We, the undersigned, petition the President to designate the proposed lands as the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument, protecting and preserving them for the enjoyment of all Americans now alive or yet to be born.
Why is this important?
The Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument has been proposed by a group of business, environmental, non-profit, and government organizations to preserve and protect the natural beauty of Southern New Mexico as well as historic sites including Mogollon Jornado, ancestral Puebloan, Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo - indigenous camps, petroglyphs, historic ranches and homesites, Butterfield Overland Mail route, World War II test and training bomb targets, and even places where Apollo astronauts trained. These areas in the Organ Mountains, Robledo Mountains, Sierra de las Uvas, and the Potrillo Volcanic Complex are threatened by development, mining, and potential abuses of the land.
Previous attempts to protect these lands required an Act of Congress. Designating them a National Monument, under the Antiquities Act of 1904, requires only an Executive Order by the President.
Protecting these special lands should be high on our list of things to do.
