Protest 49ers Homophobic Remarks

It's outrageous that 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver thinks it's acceptable to make homophobic remarks about team members who might be gay. On The Huffington Post, he was quoted as saying, "I don't do the gay guys man," and followed it with "No, we don't got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do." Culliver went on to say that gays would not be welcomed in the locker room, but if they remained closeted, he might be all right with them playing. "Yeah, come out 10 years later," he said.

Please join me in asking Chris Culliver to apologize for his remarks and for the 49ers to make it clear that homophobia has no place in the NFL and no place on any Bay Area sports team.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Wahl

Why is this important?

I am the proud mother of a gay son, and it angers me when professional athletes make homophobic remarks. We have too many kids who are bullied because of their sexual orientation or because others perceive them to be gay. It's time to end homophobia now, and athletes need to lead on this issue, not to continue a tradition of making demeaning remarks about gays in the NFL or anywhere in our society.
