Redistrict Whitehall and Darien Park Subdivisions to Sweet Apple Elementary

TO: FULTON COUNTY OPERATIONAL PLANNING DEPARTMENT AND FULTON COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION

FROM: THE RESIDENTS OF STUDY AREAS 328A (WHITEHALL) AND 341A (DARIEN PARK)

RE: REQUEST TO BE ALIGNED WITH THE REST OF THE NEIGHBORHOODS ON THE WEST SIDE OF HOUZE ROAD AND SOUTH OF HEMBREE ROAD AND BE REDISTRICTED TO SWEET APPLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT UNDER PLAN B.

We, the undersigned residents and homeowners of Darien Park and Whitehall subdivisions
(1) would prefer that no Fulton County School elementary school redistricting occur for Hembree Springs Elementary School, however if it must and since all three plans break apart the Hembree Springs Elementary School district then we,
(2) are in strong support of North Fulton Redistricting-Elementary School Alternative Plan B except we would like to request that Study Areas 328A (Whitehall) and 341A (Darien Park) be redistricted to Sweet Apple Elementary School along with the rest of the neighborhoods on Houze Way and the west side of Houze Road, which is the same boundary line used for the High School districting in all three plans,
(3) oppose Elementary School Alternative Plan A and Plan C.

Redistricting our neighborhoods to Sweet Apple Elementary would maintain a few of the most important criteria the Operational Planning Department should consider when preparing the next redistricting map for the Forum on December 10th, 2014 for school selection of our neighborhoods:

1. Geographic proximity. Sweet Apple Elementary is within a few miles of our neighborhoods with no need to travel a highway in the commuting process, compared to the other plans which require highway travel and major intersection crossings. The commute to Sweet Apple Elementary avoids the need for our elementary school children to cross some of the most dangerous intersections in Roswell en route to school [namely a) Mansell Road and Highway 9 (Alpharetta Highway), b) Holcomb Bridge Road and Highway 9 (Alpharetta Highway), and c) Crabapple Road and Highway 92.]
2. Traffic patterns. A short school commute circumvents hazardous and crowded intersections allowing our neighborhoods to avoid adding to the problematic congestion and gridlock that exists at the aforementioned areas during the school commute.
3. Feeder system will be more in alignment. The high school district line in our area is Houze Road for all three plans. All the neighborhoods on Houze Way and the west side of Houze Road are to be in the Roswell High School district. All those same neighborhoods in Plan B are districted to Sweet Apple Elementary School except Darien Park and Whitehall. Our children need to have the opportunity to make friends in elementary school that can stay with them all the way through high school.
4. Keeping neighborhood groupings together. Many of the neighborhoods that currently attend Hembree Springs Elementary School together would be redistricted for Sweet Apple Elementary under Plan B. The map cuts out our neighborhoods while redistricting all those around us into the Sweet Apple Elementary school district.

Our neighborhoods are comparatively small (Whitehall: 98 homes; Darien Park: 40 homes). The number of our elementary-aged school children would certainly not burden the Instructional Capacity or have a large impact on Projected Enrollment figures. We kindly request that you consider redistricting our neighborhoods, namely Study Area 341A (Darien Park) and Study Area 328A (Whitehall), for the reasons mentioned above. Thank you for your consideration. We are very appreciative of your efforts and attention to this matter.

Why is this important?

OUR CHILDREN'S EDUCATIONS ARE AT STAKE. ALL OWNERS AND RESIDENTS OF WHITEHALL AND DARIEN PARK WHO WOULD LIKE FOR OUR NEIGHBORHOODS TO BE REDISTRICTED TO SWEET APPLE ELEMENTARY (RATED 10/10 BY GREATSCHOOLS.ORG) UNDER THE NEW NORTH FULTON REDISTRICTING PROCESS PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION!

Fulton County Schools is in the process of evaluating redistricting options for North Fulton County. In November, 3 potential maps were released and only one of these options is acceptable to most residents in the Houze Way / Houze Rd corridor. Plan B places our children at Hembree Springs Elementary. Most of the neighborhoods around Whitehall and Darien Park are being redistricted for Sweet Apple Elementary, an excellent school. We strongly support Plan B (and oppose Plans A and C) but would like to be included in the Sweet Apple Elementary district along with our neighboring subdivisions. If you agree, please sign this petition and spread the word!
