We want the school board leaders to instruct the teachers to create less plastic waste. Many STEM teachers use materials like plastic cups, plastic straws, plastic coffee stirrers, plastic bags, and other plastic materials for projects. They just throw their materials away once they're done with them. This is a problem because most plastic that gets thrown away ends up in the ocean, which kills a lot of the sea life. We think teachers should use more biodegradable materials, and/or limit the amount of plastic items used for projects.
Why is this important?
This is important because we are trying to protect sea life. "According to the United Nations, at least 800 species worldwide are affected by marine debris, and as much as 80 percent of that litter is plastic," says Pewtrusts.org. Also, National Geographic Kids said, "Over 700 species of marine animals have been reported to have eaten or been entangled in plastic."
