Millions of Americans suffer with an array of mental health diagnoses and a small number of those receive help. They are either very wealthy, very poor, or criminal offenders. It's time we start evaluating the services currently offered and figure out a way to reach out to those who don't know how or can't reach out to us, before another school, movie theater, or mall shooting occurs.
Why is this important?
As a mental health professional, I see all too often individuals and families struggle to live balanced lives because our health care system is lacking in this area. They don't have insurance, funding runs out, or services are not covered on the plans they can afford. I keep hearing people say gun control is the answer, but I believe it's not the only piece of the puzzle we need to consider with regards to the violence we have seen in the past several years.
