A Federal Appeals Court recently gutted the Internet Neutrality laws which kept internet service providers from blocking whichever sites they choose as well as introducing plans which would cost more to the consumer to use the internet the way they have been for years.
Why is this important?
With this sudden deregulation companies will be able to deny service to sites linked to their competitors, keeping consumers from looking at different services and deciding which company is best suited to their needs. This will also give service providers free reign to decide on pricing as well as increasing rates without having to conform to the government's standard, making millions pay more for the internet they have always had. If these deregulation efforts continue then companies will try to force us back into an old outdated media rather than innovate their own industry to adapt, something that has already held us back as a nation for the longest time.
