Reinstate the Fairness Doctrine Act!

Reinstate the Fairness Doctrine and bring back fair and responsible news reporting.

Why is this important?

Introduced in 1949 by the FCC, The Fairness Doctrine required holders of broadcast licenses to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a way that was honest, equitable and balanced. In 1969 it was upheld by an 8-0 vote by the
Supreme Court. Since it was repealed under President Reagan in 1985, we have had a proliferation of partisan talk radio, Fox News and the most partisan government of my lifetime. Reinstating the act could be key to bringing sanity back to our politics.

Although the FCC is prohibited by law from infringing on the First Amendment rights of the press, it is currently illegal for broadcasters to intentionally distort the truth. Below is the link to the current FCC guidelines on broadcasting misinformation. Please contact the FCC with your complaints if you feel you are observing or hearing something that goes against their guidelines:

There has been a significant increase in signatures in the past few weeks. Thank you to everyone who has signed this petition and thank you to all the suggestions that have been made. I would like to note that the Fairness Doctrine was limited to licensed broadcasters. I would love to hear ideas as to how the intent of the Fairness Doctrine act, that the holders of broadcast licenses “... present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was honest, equitable, and balanced.” (Wikipedia) can be broadened to include the internet. The main goal, as I see it, is to stop deliberate misinformation. Any and all ideas will be welcome. Best, Diane Cook
