Rename the Jefferson Davis Memorial Chapel at VCUHS/MCV

Rename the Jefferson Davis Memorial Chapel at the West Hospital of the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center.

Why is this important?

Most Richmonders and most enrolled at and working at VCU are unaware that the Jefferson Davis Memorial Chapel is located on the 17th Floor of the West Hospital (former MCV) at The Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. This chapel must be renamed.

The chapel, dedicated in 1963 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, is a fine place for worship but who can imagine a Black person choosing to do so?

This monument to the traitor Jefferson Davis should not be on the property of a state-owned hospital dedicated to serving the region's poorest. It must be renamed and rededicated to those poor people seeking compassionate medical care.

Reasons for signing

  • Returning back to all cities, countries and all states around the world. Preventing & Stopping & slowing the spread of coronavirus and wear a mask to stop the spread of COVID-19. Release all families and children out of cages/jail. nonpublic schools may reopen for in-person instruction.
  • There are too many reasons to continue ignoring the hypocrisy of such a place. I think it's good to honor the dead in their historical setting, and I'm certainly in favor of honoring God in an intimate setting; but this is a terrible publicly funded mishmash that is just plain offensive. If a visitor came to my house and when looking for the bathroom found this memorial in my closet I would be embarrassed. Some skeletons are best removed!
  • Please rename the chapel. Davis has nothing to do with the chapel or the building.
