Reopen Acadia National Park

Reopen Acadia National Park and preserve Mount Desert Island's economy. Keep the cruise ships and bus tours invested in this community!

Why is this important?

As you know, the government shutdown has forced the closure of Acadia National Park. As you also know, Bar Harbor's primary industry is tourism. The people of this town have, at most, 5 months to make the money that supports them for the entire year. Much of that money comes in September and October, when the bulk of our cruise ships and bus tours visit to offer its patrons a chance to enjoy our foliage, especially from within Acadia National Park. Because of the closure of the park, the cruise ships are considering moving their business to other ports. Already, hotels are reporting cancellations from bus tours. I understand the government resources are being conserved during this shutdown, but I urge you, even beg you, to pass an emergency bill that would allow Acadia National Park to reopen. If the cruise ships withdraw and the bus tours stop coming, losing October's revenue will be crippling to this small community. In the spring, during the sequester, the roads of Acadia National Park remained open, but certain sections, such as the Visitor Center, were closed. While this was financially painful, it would be a welcome alternative to full closure at this point. Please, if there is anything you can do to reopen the Park, the few thousand residents that depend on it would be beyond thankful.
