For too long Rep. Upton has sided with big Corporations instead of workers. Tell him to put working families first. When businesses pay fair and just wages, this is offset by lower turnover and increased productivity. Costco, one of our most successful retailers has a starting wage of $11.50/hour for most entry level jobs, and its average wage for hourly workers is $21 per hour.
Why is this important?
As a clergyman I support an increase in the minimum wage to at least $10.10 an hour. Members of my own family are among thousands of workers who are working hard every week while struggling to get by on poverty wages. But this is also a benefit for business.
The argument that a higher minimum wage would hurt business is old and tired. There is clear and compelling evidence that the economy and companies enjoy real benefits when workers are paid more.
