Repeal the Lautenberg Amendment
We, the undersigned are writing to urge you to introduce new legislation
to repeal the unconstitutional ban on misdemeanor ex domestic violence
offenders' right to bear arms. (The Lautenberg Amendment) Felony
domestic violence ex-offenders can petition and have their civil rights
restored. They may then purchase guns. Misdemeanor ex-offenders are banned
from gun ownership for life. This amendment not only weakens the Second
Amendment: it also makes no sense. Please address this issue by
re-introducing H.R.276 introduced by Mr. Goode in 2003, or write new
legislation to repeal this "law" with haste, and help strengthen
the security of our nation.
This Amendment has done nothing to end the DV issue.
Two things are evident from the passage of draconian domestic violence and abuse laws: (1) after these draconian laws were passed the per capita number of domestic violence and abuse court cases increased by nearly an order of magnitude, and (2) draconian laws have done nothing to solve the problem as the population-normalized yearly number of cases in Colorado has remained constant since 2004 after initially causing a rapid increase in court cases. The measure of effectiveness of any criminal law is whether the crime it is intended to control diminished after the law was passed.
The best data available suggests quite the opposite has happened after the passage of draconian laws against domestic violence in 1994-1996.
In effect the Lautenberg Amendment increased the number of court cases for domestic violence.

Why is this important?
The Lautenberg Amendment is in violation of the Second Amendment and a violation of civil rights by making a misdemeanor a livetime ban on firearms. This law was introduced to stop domestic violence and abuse. But it has FAILED! Sign my petition and abolish this amendment.
