Congress should pass, and the president should sign, legislation on a national disposal plan to recover the energy/resources of our nation’s stranded nuclear waste using advanced reactor designs and permanent disposal of the resulting secondary material.
The legislation should be based on the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future 2012 report's recommendations that chart a resource recovery pathway solution for our nation's nuclear waste issue.
Why is this important?
The petition calls for the introduction of legislation to solve our nation's nuclear waste issue by recovering the energy remaining in spent nuclear fuel, greatly reducing its long-term radioactivity, and providing alternative permanent disposal options than deep geological sequestration. The solution will also greatly enhance our nation's energy security, promote long-term sustainable energy use, and greatly reduce emissions of CO2.
