As a democracy, we should believe in and encourage citizens to vote. Restoring voting rights to persons who have served their prison sentences and returned home gives people a stake in their communities and reduces the chances of re-offending.
Maryland law recognizes that a court sentence does not eliminate a citizen's right to vote. But the current process for restoring that right is complicated and unclear.
Please support SB340/HB980, which would eradicate the confusion by clarifying that voting rights are restored upon release from prison.
Why is this important?
The Maryland House of Delegates is considering legislation that would restore voting rights to nearly 40,000 Marylanders.
