If we had run off elections voters would be able to vote for those they really preferred. As it is, they are very reluctant to vote for a deserving candidate who they perceive as not likely to win or who has not got major party affiliations, and thus throw away their vote. If there were run off election procedures, we will be surprised how many good candidates would gain upset victories. Even if they do not win that time, their political careers would be enhanced.
