Safeway and Kroger say no to GMO salmon: Will Costco follow?

Dear Mr. Jelinek, CEO of Costco,

As you may be aware, the US Food and Drug Administration is considering approval of the genetically engineered salmon, which would be the first time in history a regulator has approved a genetically engineered animal for human consumption. Polls show the overwhelming majority of consumers don’t want to eat genetically engineered salmon. Nearly 2 million people -- including scientists, fishermen, business owners and consumers -- have written to the FDA in opposition to the approval of genetically engineered salmon.

More than 60 grocery retailers across the U.S., including Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Aldi, Target, Kroger and Safeway, have made commitments to not sell genetically engineered salmon and other seafood.

I urge Costco to join these other leaders in making a commitment to not sell GMO salmon or other GMO seafood.

Why is this important?

Kroger and Safeway, the two largest national grocery chains, have made commitments not to sell GMO salmon.

The FDA has not yet given this product the scrutiny it deserves and may fail the public, wild salmon and fishing communities everywhere if it approves genetically engineered salmon. Worse, the FDA will probably not require it to be labeled.

Because of pressure from consumers, 60 grocery chains representing over 9,000 stores nationwide have committed not to sell GMO Salmon.

Now we are asking you to turn up the heat on Craig Jelinek – CEO of Costco – one of the largest retailers of seafood in the U.S. Tell him not to sell GE salmon.
