Safeway: Stop crushing birds to death on your farms!

Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) recently investigated a Certified Humane, cage-free egg farm in California that supplies eggs to Safeway. The investigators found a gruesome pile of dozens of dead hens left to rot on the barn floor. Facility records indicate that hundreds of birds were dying each day, including many from “piling,” a phenomenon where birds crush each other to death due to intense confinement and stress. Other birds had been so badly pecked at that they had lost all their feathers.

During the investigation, DxE rescued a hen and named her Scarlett. Scarlett was defeathered and had eye trauma from being confined in the farm, but with veterinary care and a peaceful home at a sanctuary, she recovered. Watch her story at www.crushedatsafeway.com.

Safeway markets their eggs as humane despite allowing birds to languish and die in cruel and unnatural conditions. Sign the petition, and ask Safeway to stop exploiting hens.
