We are calling for a change in the way officers disarm suspects who do not have a firearm. Stop using deadly and excessive force when a taser or K-9 can be used to control the situation.
Why is this important?
On Sunday July 1, 2012, Saginaw Police were dispatched to the Riverview Plaza where they encountered a mentally challenged man who had a small knife in his possession. Witnesses say officers demanded that he drop the knife or they would release the K-9s. Witnesses say instead of releasing the dogs, officers opened fire -- striking the man numerous times -- killing him. Officers claim the man rushed in at them.
Many in the community believe the mentally ill victim could have easily been brought down by use of taser or K-9s, and that law enforcement used excessive force. Also, there were many children and families shopping in the plaza during this time.
We are calling for our officials to do the right thing and change how officers deal with individuals who have non-firearm type weapons.
