We can't raise taxes on the middle class, as that will harm the economy. However, most spending cuts will take money from the middle and lower class and have the same negative impact on the economy: less demand for goods or services. Let's raise taxes on incomes over $50k slightly, and more progressively to 45% on incomes over $2 million: enough to meet our current obligations and zero out the deficit. Then makes specific committees to, in 6 months, find relatively painless ways to cut from defense, entitlements, and other areas, putting the savingings toward paying down the debt
Why is this important?
Spending cuts are tax increases through the back door, and hurt those who can least afford them.
