Santa Monica City Council: Petition to Appeal CrossFit Variances at Edgemar Center for the Arts

We, a concerned community of Ocean Park residents, strongly object to the CrossFit opening within the historic and landmark Edgemar Center on Main Street in Santa Monica. CrossFit is an intensive, boot camp style workout that focuses on running outdoors, dropping heavy dead weights, lunging up and down stairs, and other high-intensity elements – all while shouting together and playing very loud music. This does not fit with the clearly stated and long-held mission of the Edgemar Center for the Arts, and we object to the conditional use permit (13CUP004) and parking variance (13VAR005) being granted by the Santa Monica City Council which would allow this Crossfit gym to open.

To be clear, we support local business and welcome new and diverse tenants in the Edgemar Center. We believe that businesses have the right to thrive, if they are appropriate to their setting. But we also believe strongly that residents and neighbors have the right to peace and reasonable quiet.

Why is this important?
