Tupelo City Council: Remove the baggy pants ordinance

We, the citizens of Tupelo, are opposed to the Public Indecency City Ordinance #7, which prohibits the wearing of sagging pants or skirts that expose undergarments or skin.

Partial nudity and the exposing of one’s genitals in public is already prohibited by state law. The partial visibility of one’s undergarment, however, is not indecent exposure and should not be punishable by law as such. We believe we have the right to choose our own clothes and how we wear them. The clothing a juvenile wears out of the house is the responsibility of his/her legal guardian, not the city. This ordinance is in violation of Amendment I and IV in the Bill of Rights and infringes on our personal liberties as Americans.

We petition the City Council to remove this ordinance at once.

Why is this important?

For the sake of our personal liberties as Americans we must speak up for our rights to control what clothes we wear and how we wear them. Whether you wear baggy pants or not, stand up for those who do and sign the petition today!
