Save the Sammons Family Cemetery
Reroute the Route 29 Bypass to respect and preserve the Sammons Family Cemetery.
Why is this important?
We are asking the the Virginia Department of Transportation and Governor Bob McDonnell reroute the Route 29 Bypass to preserve the history and dignity of these human beings. The bypass was already rerouted previously to avoid a pet cemetery and spare the feelings of the pet owners. However these more than 100 year old graves of slave descendants lack "significant historical value" according to VDoT and they plan on moving them to make way for the road. Local historian Cinder Stanton calls this report “superficial and full of factual errors.”
Please help us honor the dead and let them rest in peace.
