Save The Wolves!

Dear U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,

We urge you not to prematurely strip gray wolves of Endangered Species Act protections. The best available science shows gray wolves are not yet recovered and occupy only a small fraction of their historic habitat. Without the much needed federal protections, it will be easier for people to shoot, poison, or kill gray wolves across the country.

Wolves are important members of the ecosystem and removing protections nationwide from these remarkable creatures will cause irreversible harm to the already struggling populations in western states. Wolves need federal protections to recover and thrive across the American West.

Why is this important?

The Trump administration recently announced its plan to remove federal Endangered Species Act protections from gray wolves in the lower-48 states. This is a decision based purely on politics – not science.

While wolves may be rebounding in the Great Lakes Region, they are not recovered in the Pacific Northwest, and they remain absent from the southern Rocky Mountains. Removing protections nationwide from wolves will cause irreparable harm to the slowly recovering populations in Oregon, Washington, and California; and will effectively prevent the eventual recovery of the species in states like Colorado and Utah.

The Western Environmental Law Center is a nonprofit, public-interest environmental law firm and our expert attorneys will use the full power of the law to retain the protections gray wolves need to recover across the American West.
