  • Senate Republicans: Protect the Universities
Governor Snyder and Members of the Michigan House and Senate, please ensure that David Agema's amendment to impose a "sin tax" on public universities lands in the garbage bin where it belongs. During a time where public education operates under increasingly difficult financial constraints, ideologically driven legislations have even less of a place in educational policy than ever. The amendment violates the autonomy of public universities and is thus a direct attack on academic freedom. Moreover, the amendment’s clear intent to divide the academic community is deeply immoral. Targeting unmarried couples, and by intent particularly gay and lesbian families, at a time where every public poll shows significant majority support for civil unions flies in the face of the country’s commitment to equality. Americans, as a rule, do not want the government to tell them how to conduct their private lives. Middle class families already suffer from the rising cost of college tuition. If the amendment passes, the loss of funds may well contribute to an even steeper rise, thus penalizing all Michigan families in the interest of an obsolete sexual morality Americans have rejected resoundingly. Please ensure that the reconciliation process eliminates this hate-driven piece of legislation. House

  • Extend and Improve Washington's Renewable Energy Cost Recovery Program
I support local businesses in Washington State that install distributed and community-based renewable energy projects. Eastern Washington in particular has great wind and solar resources, and there are many Washingtonians who would like to invest in small-scale renewable energy systems to reduce their electric bills and lower their operating costs. I urge you to support legislation to strengthen and extend incentives for on-site and community wind and solar through the Washington Renewable Energy Cost Recovery Program (CRP) without weakening other existing renewable energy policies, following recommendations endorsed by the Local Energy Alliance of Washington. This would increase competition in the energy sector and let customers choose the renewable energy technology that best suits their local resources. Expanded technology neutralizing CRP incentives with consumer protection measures would allow more Washingtonians to participate cost-effectively in a wider range of locations. The CRP was enacted by the legislature not only to encourage renewable energy, but also to give all Washingtonians the opportunity to participate in our energy future. I urge you to prioritize passing a CRP extension this session and ensure that distributed wind and solar can continue playing a valuable role in diversifying Washington's energy infrastructure.

  • THE CONSTITUTION IS NOT OPTIONAL ATA SENATE IMPEACHMENT TRIAL
As your Ohio constituents and fellow Americans, we urge you to: 1. Insist on a full, fair, and open trial of President Donald J. Trump before the U.S. Senate, including witness testimony and documentary evidence. In considering whether to remove a sitting President from office, you and your fellow Senators have a duty to weigh all the facts relevant to the President’s abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, as alleged in the articles of impeachment. The American people demand and deserve no less than a complete accounting of what the President did, when he did it, and why he did it. 2. Support the bi-partisan War Powers Resolution introduced by Sen. Tim Kaine, which would restore to Congress the sole authority to make and declare war, as specified in Article I, Section 8, of the U.S. Constitution. When a meek legislature allows a bellicose President to take military action against another nation on flimsy or non-existence evidence, tragedy inevitably results. 3. Stop the steady encroachment of power by this President, especially where it endangers the health, safety, and security of the American public. This includes not only the President’s exercise of military power against Iran without prior Congressional consultation or authorization, but also his refusal to provide documents pursuant to Congressional oversight in a wide range of other matters. Rather than merely rubber-stamping a President who would like to run the country like a family business – answerable to neither a board of directors nor shareholders – Congress must re-assert itself as an independent, co-equal branch of government.

  • Make UVa Grounds Safe Again
In light of Ms. Graham's and Ms. Harrington's tragic disappearances from or adjacent to university property and the multitude of sexual assaults in the same areas over the past 5 years, UVa administration and police need to step up patrolling and student alerts to make grounds a safe place again. Students, professors, university staff, hospital employees and all other members of the university community deserve to live and work in a community where sexual predators and violent criminals do not feel comfortable hunting for victims on or nearby university property, which based on recent criminal activity, they very much do.
