  • Protect Small Farms in Michigan
Reverse the recent decision to modify the Right to Farm Act in Michigan. Protect our individual rights to provide our own food and make small farmers a priority in Michigan! Protecting small farms in Michigan should be a top priority. Many farmers' markets are a consortium of small farms producing local produce. This is a vital part of local economies in many areas in Michigan and around the country. Michigan lawmakers should support the rights of individuals, not just the interest of big business.

  • Pass a minimum wage bill out of the House Finance Committee
Chair Luke, You deferred the minimum wage bill without scheduling a second hearing, and unless you change your mind this ensures that the bill will die in the House on Friday. PLEASE schedule a decision making hearing right away, this bill is too important to too many people to let drop, or do behind closed doors.

  • Stop ICE from expanding operations in Broadview in a 200,000 sq ft. Warehouse. "HOUSE OF HELL"
Coalition Against Broadview ICE Facility Petition - Stop ICE from expanding operations in Broadview in a 200,000 sq ft. Warehouse "HOUSE OF HELL) In Illinois, particularly in communities like Broadview, we have witnessed firsthand the heartbreaking and disruptive actions of ICE agents. They are invading our schools, workplaces, and even our streets to carry out what feels like state-sponsored kidnappings. They target immigrants, our friends, family, and neighbors, using racial profiling tactics, leaving emotional and social scars that affect the entire community. Now, ICE is planning to escalate its operations by purchasing a building in Broadview, Illinois  along south 25th avenue and Lexington. This would serve as a hub for their agents and a processing center for immigrants, facilitating their unjust detentions and hurried deportations. This expansion is not just a local issue; it resonates with communities throughout the United States, where many are fighting against the unjust and inhumane treatment of immigrants.  Here’s a list of thoughtful points of concerns if ICE purchases a 200,000 square foot warehouse. • "Public Use/Eminent Domain": The government can only take property for a project that benefits the public.  The current building 1930 Beach Street is restricted to be inspected for Inhumane practices by Illinois Congressional Leaders. Chicago Sun-Times reports, “U.S. Sens. Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin, both Illinois Democrats, on Friday requested a tour of the Broadview ICE facility that has drawn heated protest for weeks, but they were denied entry,(2025, Armentrout). According to the Law Offices of Evenson & Becker states, “One of the key requirements for eminent domain is a legitimate public use, such as building a highway or creating a public park. If you believe that the government’s stated purpose for the taking does not meet the public use requirement, you may have grounds to challenge the eminent domain action” (n.a, Evenson, Becker).  The detrimental impact on our community cannot be understated. The presence of ICE instills fear, breaks families apart, and undermines the very values of freedom and diversity that the United States stands for. The community in Broadview and others across the nation deserve to live without fear of sudden raids and deportations. Instead of funding expansion, resources could be better spent on programs that support community building, integration, and humanitarian efforts which promote the dignity and rights of all people, regardless of their birthplace. We propose stopping this expansion and redirecting government funds towards efforts that support immigrant communities rather than tearing them apart. Join us in this fight for justice and sign this petition to demand that ICE cease their plans to purchase this building and focus on humane and fair treatment of all immigrants. Your signature can help make a difference. Let's ensure that our communities remain places of hope and safety for everyone. Please sign this petition today. References: Evenson, Becker, (n.a). • Temporary Housing Assistance continued
TSA is coming to an end on 12/12/12 for temporary hotel lodging, but there are plenty of families still trying to recover from the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy. They have no place to go and will have to resort to a shelter until their house becomes habitable as there are few to no apartments for rent. The hotel stay is still very much needed and should be extended.

  • Include Acupuncture Under Federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act: Deadline 1/31/12
In 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, a health insurance reform law intended to ensure access to quality and affordable health insurance for all Americans. Starting in 2014, most health plans will be required to offer a comprehensive package of items and services to patients, known as "essential health benefits” (EHB). Under the new law, EHB must cover certain specific services including emergency services, maternity and newborn care, prescription drugs as well as preventive and wellness services, among others. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is currently accepting input regarding their approach to establishing EHBs. A strong public show of support for acupuncture as an essential health benefit will be noticed by policymakers and may lay a solid foundation for future federal acupuncture services recognition. Send an email directly to: [email protected] and carbon copy [email protected] so that the AAAOM can track the letters sent. The deadline for comments is January 31, 2012. Thank you for your support to help the AOM profession. If you have any questions or need any assistance, please contact AAAOM at 1-866-455-7999, extension 3, or [email protected]. Sample EHB Letter to: [email protected] cc: [email protected] U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 200 Independence Avenue, S.W. Washington, D.C. 20201 To Whom It May Concern: In response to The Department of Health and Human Services 12/16/11 bulletin outlining proposed policies that will give states more flexibility to implement the Affordable Care Act, please accept my comments contained in this letter and include same as part of the Public Comment period due by 1/31/12: A. I [have been or am currently] a patient of acupuncture and consider it an essential part of my health care. [Describe your success story here.] B. Acupuncture should be included as an Essential Health Benefit by HHS under the Affordable Care Act. C. States should be specifically directed by HHS to include acupuncture in their Essential Health Benefits Package. • FIGHT THE TOWER! Stop Cell Tower Construction in Residential Housing
AT&T is in the final stages of getting city permits for an unmanned facility of 12 panel antennas and 24 remote radio header units atop 6522 La Mirada Ave. in Zone: RD1.5-1XL. Putting up this tower puts all of the people in that building at a health risk- bombarding them with electromagnetic waves 24 hours a day. This is only the first step in putting similar towers in everybody's neighborhood. With no employee on the premises to maintain the tower should something go wrong! This needs to be stopped now! Most of the residents in this section 8 apartment that is about to be turned into a GIGANTIC ELECTROMAGNETIC TUMOR WELCOME PARTY are Latina mothers and children. Because of their developing brains, they are not supposed to use cell phones on a regular basis, let alone live underneath a cell tower of this magnitude. Please join us in our fight to stop this vile plan in its tracks!

  • Voting Equality
Ohio is trying to enforce a change to Democratic districts for voting from the Republican districts. Times for voting should be the same state wide. If open 24 hours one place then open 24 hours in another.

  • Give Justice Kennedy a way to distinguish gerrymandering
Justice Kennedy recently wrote that he would like a way to identify gerrymandered districts. We, the undersigned would like to provide him with just such a principle: if the border of an electoral district contains more than 12 edges, or if the square of the perimeter exceeds 25 times its area, the district has been gerrymandered. This is not to say that such mathematics should override the obligations of electoral maps to conform with the Voting Rights Act, but that it will quickly and reliably identify districts which are unnecessarily complex in shape, and which are measurably non-compact.
