  • Napa: We Need Congressman Mike Thompson to endorse the Robin Hood Tax on Wall Street HR1579
We are asking our Congressman Mike Thompson to co-sponsor and endorse The Robin Hood Tax on Wall Street, a tiny Sales Tax on Stock, Bond, Commodities, Debentures, Derivatives, & Note Sales. HOW MUCH IS THE TINY ROBIN HOOD SALES TAX? • .5% on stocks, just $.50 (50 cents) for each $100 of stock trades • .1% on bonds, just $.10 (ten cents) for each $100 of bond trades • .005% on derivative speculation in currencies, commodities, or other trades, just $.005 (half a penny) for each $100 of trades. WHY DOES NAPA NEED THIS TAX? SOME OF THE ROBIN HOOD TAX BENEFITS FOR NAPA ARE: The revenue generated is estimated by economists to be $350 billion each year! This tax can have six critically important benefits: 1) By reducing some of the taxation unfairness that has created cuts in promised and paid for services such as Social Security, Unemployment and Medicare. 2) The Robin Hood tax can stop program cuts to and improve foreclosure relief, job creation, & foster reducing the burden of medical and student debt. 3) The Robin Hood tax will reduce the power of Wall Street over Main Street, help stabilize the stock market, slowdown speculative trading that increases food and gas prices, and create incentives for productive investment in the real economy. 4) It will produce jobs. Economists state that when invested in big job producing sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, the Robin Hood tax would create millions of jobs that pay a living wage. 5) It is fair because it closes a huge sales tax loophole for the Rich. In addition, it taxes International Financiers that currently pay no sales tax. 6) It helps preserve programs that protect working people and the poor – such as Medicare and Social Security, jobs for teachers and firefighters. • United States House of Representatives: Stop holding the country hostage!
I understand that this country has financial problems, truly I do. We must find a way to overcome our current financial problems before it causes much deeper problems that will affect this country for generations to come. You, as a member of Congress, are charged with the responsibility of finding a workable solution which also represents the will of the people who elected you. If you feel that current laws, such as President Obama's healthcare reform law, do not represent the views of your constituents, it is your responsibility to use the legislative process to make changes that do represent those views. Be that as it may, shutting the government down and collecting a paycheck while you demand that laws which you don't agree with be repealed or defunded is not the way to solve the problem. The healthcare reform bill was passed by Congress and signed by the President. Changing it should be done through the standard legislative process--not through taking the country hostage, demands for change with accompanying threats of continued shutdown, and cuts to the paychecks of people who have no direct power to do anything about it. I'm disappointed in Congress, and I want you to know that I blame the Republicans, and specifically the Republicans in the United States House of Representatives for this particular problem. This is not a question of fighting for what is right, like many in Congress would have us believe. You betrayed your constituents, and in particular, you've betrayed all of the government workers who have been furloughed as a result of your actions. You have done this in order to advance your own agenda, it's as simple as that. The fact that you continue to be paid out of our tax dollars even as you betray us is reprehensible.

  • Tell Rep. Salmon to support immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship
Please support the pathway to citizenship for millions of Americans-in-waiting. All Americans, regardless of their immigration status, must be given a chance at citizenship. The 11 million immigrants currently living in the US without immigration status need a pathway to citizenship so that they can pursue their American DREAM.

  • Fight corruption - stop the TPP
Don't fast-track the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a corporate trade deal that will 1. sabotage serious efforts to combat climate change; 2. hurt workers with a race-to-the-bottom approach to labor standards; 4. further erode democratic principles with tribunals that will enable corporations to sue sovereign governments over labor or environmental protections; 5. and as we've seen from NAFTA and similar trade deals, it will strain communities here from increased immigration as people in other countries try to escape crippling economic changes due to so-called free trade agreements.

  • Rep. Hurt: Vote Against Cuts To Food Stamps
When kids are hungry they struggle to learn. How can we allow kids in America to show up for school so hungry they can't focus or learn? I urge you to oppose the deep cuts to the food stamp (SNAP) program which were recently proposed in the House budget.
