The New York Police Department has repeatedly used violence against peaceful protesters in the Occupy Wall Street movement. On March 17th, several protesters were hospitalized by police violence. The Department seems to be actively attempting to suppress the nonviolent movement through infiltration, monitoring and violent arrest. We call for a full, independent investigation by the state attorney general into the active suppression of the movement by the New York Police Department, including, but not limited to: 1. The use of taxpayer funds to infiltrate and monitor peaceful Occupy protest planning. 2. Departmental practices that lead to, or allow for, the violent dispersal of crowds and the violent arrest of protestors. 3. Civil rights violations of protestors by the police.

In the interest of improving boater safety in New York Harbor, we the undersigned request that the US Coast Guard restore navigational access to the channel between Ellis Island and Liberty State Park. The current safety and security zone, which prohibits passage under the Ellis Island Bridge, was put in place after the attacks of September 11, 2001. Since then, recreational use of the harbor has increased dramatically. Meanwhile access to other sensitive sites, including the World Trade Center itself, has been restored. Reopening the channel behind Ellis Island would improve harbor safety by giving small-boat mariners the option of avoiding the tides, traffic, and rough water of the main shipping channel to the east of the island, and by reducing the opportunity for conflict with larger vessels. In 2013, a senior officer reported that a Coast Guard inquiry into the issue found that the safety arguments outlined above outweighed security arguments for maintaining the current closure. We understand that changing the boundaries of a security zone is a formal process that requires amending the Code of Federal Regulations. We call on the Coast Guard to begin that process this spring, before the start of the recreational boating season. Thank you!

Disturbingly, the Obama administration has criminally prosecuted more whistleblowers under the Espionage Act then all other past administrations combined. As Congress grows increasingly dependent on whistleblowers to report waste, fraud, abuse and substantial threats to public health and safety, it is imperative that you provide them the protections they need to come forward. The American people also rely on whistleblowers more than ever before. Thanks to whistleblowers we know that Big Brother has moved into every American’s smart phone and computer. Whether that policy is right or wrong, the public had a right to know. Only thanks to whistleblowers, we do. Please support legislation that would arm whistleblowers with an affirmative defense for criminal prosecutions, and make it illegal to open a criminal investigation in retaliation for activities shielded by the Whistleblower Protection Act.
