  • Tell the IRS: Close This Hedge-fund Loophole
I urge the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service to end the hedge fund reinsurance loophole. I was shocked when I found out that many hedge fund managers are further reducing their taxes by pretending to run offshore reinsurance firms. The IRS and Treasury Department have a duty to preserve fairness in the tax code, and the hedge fund reinsurance loophole is plainly abusive and unfair. I urge you to adopt a test that will prevent even the most creative and pernicious hedge fund managers from utilizing this loophole. The three-prong test proposed by former Representative David Camp is the best proposal for preventing abuses and ensuring tax fairness.

  • Massachusetts: Label GMOs
We, the undersigned citizens of the commonwealth, call upon your leadership to enact legislation requiring the labeling of all foods that contain genetically engineered ingredients and of all seeds that have been produced through genetic engineering, otherwise referred to as "GMO foods" or "GMOs." We have a right to know what is in the food we eat, what we are feeding to our families, and what we are growing in our farms and gardens. We are asking for a GMO labeling bill to be signed into law this session that will be effective at preserving the transparency of our food supply and robust enough to withstand constitutional challenge. Our children and future generations will thank you for taking action now to protect the genetic integrity of our food, our seeds, and our bodies.

  • Tell Kroger to provide paid sick leave to employees
Kroger is the largest supermarket chain in the United States. The workers there are doing an amazing job supporting our communities despite this awful coronavirus health crisis. The least Kroger can do is ensure its employees have paid sick leave.

  • Urgent Call for Reform: Strengthening the University of Maryland's Response to Sexual Harassment
Dear President Pines, I hope this letter finds you well. We are writing to you as concerned students of the University of Maryland, College Park community to address the pressing issue of sexual harassment on our campus. While acknowledging the university's commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment, I believe there is an urgent need to reform the current code of conduct and policies to more effectively combat sexual harassment. To this end, we propose the implementation of the following changes: Comprehensive Education and Prevention Programs: We urge the university to institute mandatory and comprehensive sexual assault prevention programs for all incoming students. By providing education on consent, bystander intervention, and healthy relationships, we can empower our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to a safer campus environment. We also urge further transparency on the current training required of staff and faculty at UMD. This would allow students to hold the curriculum accountable and ensure staff and faculty are equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to address concerns, prevent occurrences, and protect themselves from sexual harassment and misconduct. Anonymous Reporting Mechanisms: It is essential to establish and widely publicize anonymous reporting mechanisms for survivors and witnesses. This will create a safe space for individuals to come forward without fear of retaliation, thereby encouraging a culture of accountability and support. The process provided by the code of conduct on anonymity suggests that anonymity requests can be overridden and the OCRSM Title IX reporting mechanism should make more clear that items like "Name" or "UID" are not required to submit a report. Regular Campus Climate Surveys: To continually assess the campus climate regarding sexual assault and gauge the effectiveness of prevention programs and support services, I propose the implementation of regular surveys. Gathering feedback directly from the community will not only help identify areas that require improvement but also ensure that the university's response remains responsive and adaptive.

  • Federal Elected Officials: Pass legislation to prevent the US from going over the fiscal cliff or...
Failure to avert the fiscal cliff will cause American citizens financial pain, while obstructionist legislators escape its consequences. Instead let's hold obstructionist legislators responsible and accountable by fining them a daily percentage of their salaries until they successfully pass legislation. Based upon an idea by Ari Melber, MSNBC analyst, I suggest a petition insisting that: 1) if the House Speaker or Senate Majority Leader fail to schedule a vote on proposed legislation or the Senate Minority Leader prevents such through filibustering, notice of such be broadcast loudly, widely, and continuously until resolved; 2) when the vote is taken, all legislators and their "yay" or "nay" votes be broadly publicized so that obstructionists are identified; and, 3) Americans mobilize and band together through further petitions, letters to newspaper editors, calls to elected officials for those obstructionist officials to forfeit a percentage of their salary until that legislation is passed (Melber suggested a daily fine of 25% of total salary which would be noticeable but perhaps unenforceable, yet would draw attention to the seriousness with which Americans hold their representatives accountable ). America was founded "of the people, by the people, and FOR the people" so it seems obvious that the time to assert our ownership of our country is now.

  • Tell Congress: It's Time To Fix Our Justice System
This petition urges Congress to enact THE NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE COMMISSION ACT. Irregularities and inequities in America’s criminal justice system challenge our notions of fundamental fairness. This bill will establish a commission to study the current functioning of the criminal justice system. Why We Urgently Need this Legislation: Sen. Jim Webb has introduced this bill in the Senate in Feb, 2010, but it has not progressed. It has not been introduced in the House. •With 5% of the world's population, our country now houses 25% of the world's reported prisoners. •The number of incarcerated drug offenders has soared 1200% since 1980. •Four times as many mentally ill people are in prisons than in mental health hospitals. •Post-incarceration re-entry programs are haphazard and often nonexistent, undermining public safety and making it extremely difficult for ex-offenders to become full, contributing members of society. “This is not a political question; it is a leadership challenge that affects every community in the country and calls for us to act,” said Senator Webb. “We can be smarter about whom we incarcerate, improve public safety outcomes, make better use of taxpayer dollars, and bring greater fairness to our justice system. Congress: Pass this Bill!

  • End US Air Force Jet Flyovers at NASCAR events
For the past 25 plus years, the US Air Force has performed flyovers of military fighter jets and/or cargo aircraft at NASCAR events for their Sunday auto races across the nation. This extremely wasteful and unnecessary activity contributes to global warming with the significant amount of CO2 and other harmful products being added into the atmosphere. We only have one habitable planet and only one atmosphere. We must do all we can to protect it. Does NASCAR need the USAF security at their venues ? No. They do it to add entertainment for their fans at the cost to us and to the worsening climate change. It is totally unnecessary and it should have ended years ago. These flyovers by US Air Force military aircraft are a complete and total waste of taxpayer dollars, a significant waste of highly expensive aircraft, and a waste of fuel that increases significant emissions into the already polluted atmosphere. These flyovers are not necessary and do not keep America safe. I am asking everyone who reads this to please sign and inform others to get more climate activists involved and to end this extremely wasteful practice. Please write or call President Biden and ask him to issue an Executive Order to end military jet flyovers at all sporting events.

  • Yonkers Music Hall of Fame/ Earl D.M.X. Simmons Performing Arts Center
To the Honorable Mayor Mike Spano and YCAP We, the undersigned residents and former residents of Yonkers, New York, as well as the Entertainment Community, respectfully request the creation of a Yonkers Music Hall of Fame. and Earl "D.M.X." Simmons Performing Arts Center. Our city has a rich and diverse musical history, and it is high time that we honor the individuals and groups who have contributed to this legacy. Simmons Performing Arts Center. This location is convenient for both residents and visitors, and its historic significance makes it an ideal choice for this important cultural landmark. The Yonkers Music Hall of Fame and Earl "D.M.X." Simmons Performing Arts Center.would celebrate the achievements of musicians, producers, and other industry professionals who have influenced and contributed to Yonkers' music scene. The Hall of Fame would showcase memorabilia, musical instruments, artwork, and other materials related to the inductees. We believe that creating a Yonkers Music Hall of Fame would be a great way to preserve our city's vibrant musical heritage, while also creating a new tourist attraction that would draw visitors from near and far. It would be a source of pride for our community and a way to inspire future generations of musicians and music lovers. We also believe that a performing arts center dedicated to Earl "DMX" Simmons would be an incredible tribute to a man who meant so much to our city and to the world of music. We think that a facility like this would serve as a fitting and lasting memorial for someone who brought so much joy and inspiration into our lives. As well as become a major resource of learning for the city's talented youth. We respectfully request that the Yonker Board of Education and the Mayor's Office consider this proposal and work together to create a Yonkers Music Hall of Fame and Earl "D.M.X." • Have the Gov. of the US ensure the availability of zinc acetate and gluconate lozenges
    1. Demand that Congress pass legislation to make zinc acetate and/or gluconate lozenges: - widely available to institutions housing and caring for the elderly - widely available at health institutions to begin treatment for front-line medical staff who come down with symptoms - available to military troops who are at risk in barracks to use for onset of upper respiratory infections 2. Have the government take over facilities to make the lozenges, or subsidize the production for makers of the lozenges so that they are widely available 3. Demand that the CDC issue a position paper on the use of zinc lozenges in COVID-19 and test their use in treatment (in double-blinded studies) in vulnerable populations. This could certainly be done in volunteers.
