  • PLEASE SIGN TO IMPEACH Judge Benjamin Smith and Help a Child See His Mother and Family Again
This petition calls for the impeachment of Judge Benjamin Smith of the 380th Judicial District Court for breaching the Texas Code of Judicial Conduct through his misuse of power and authority over his Court. A magistrate who believes he can ignore the law and the rights of American Citizens in his Court is one who does not contribute to the betterment of society. In this Court, ruled by bias and personal opinion as opposed to law and equitable reasoning, abused parties (attorneys and clients) are suppressed into adherence. For fear of suffering retaliatory interactions with this Judge in future cases, attorneys succumb to his authority, even if it compromises their ethics. Judge Benjamin Smith is a prime example of a public servant who abuses a position of power and authority, which was designed to protect the rights of all who enter a Court of law. Instead he uses his position as Judge to further his own professional endeavors by cultivating business and political relationships. It would be more than inequitable for this abuse of power, which violates the rights of citizens, to go without penalty. To protect our own rights and the rights of our fellow citizens from such treatment, we must assemble, unite and demand reconstruction. Everyone in Collin County knows, including attorneys who are forced to accept the process, that District Court Judges such as Judge Benjamin Smith act under the "good old boy" system making it understood that the attorney with the higher political reign wins every time such as found in Collin County records. It is a political hierarchy and Judge Benjamin Smith along with others act not in the best interest of the child and its family but instead based on what decision will best further their political interests to ensure top campaign contributions by attorneys, and how much money they are paid under the table to give a favorable outcome for a certain party.

  • Allow LGBT community to save lives in their communities by donating blood!
Dear Mr President, Members of Congress, and the FDA: We, the undersigned, ask you to examine and put an end to the FDA's long standing history of discriminating and denying LGBT Americans from donating blood and helping save their fellow Americans. This policy was created at the beginning of a tragic epidemic to protect the blood supply, as there were insufficient tests to detect the various antibodies that are created when HIV is present in blood. That paradigm shifted years ago due to medical advances that have been made over the last three decades. Presently there are 14 tests, 11 of which test for infectious diseases and 3 of which certainly will detect any HIV antibodies present, that all blood donations receive. Our blood supply currently undergoes enough tests to ensure that the entire blood supply is safe for every patient in America. Thirty years later, HIV is a very different disease and we know now that it does not discriminate against you, only humans do. It doesn't care if you are gay or straight, black or white, short or tall, or male or female. In fact, decades of statistics have proven that HIV amongst same gender partners has been steadily on the decline for many years. However it is unfortunately on the rise in the heterosexual and elderly populations, who are the bulk of the 5% of Americans who can donate and actually do. If this trend continues it could potentially further decrease the number of potential donors thus shrinking the already strained and limited blood supply. We the LGBT community and supporters wish to thank our long standing allies in Congress that have fought the good fight alongside us and President Obama for standing up for Marriage Equality and for doing the right thing again by not defending DOMA; thereby allowing the Courts to properly sort out and end the institutionalized discrimination that it truly is. These however, are amazing steps in the right direction towards equality and give our community so many rights we were previously denied. But we the undersigned, would like the right to donate blood and give the gift of life back to our fellow Americans. Please end the FDA's outdated discriminatory policy against the LGBT community. Thank you.

  • President Faust: Investigate the anti-Ukrainian actions of the Harvard police and rescind the ord...
On Sunday May 11, conductor Vladimir Spivakov, a supporter of Russian President V. Putin and his military aggression against Ukraine, performed with his orchestra at Harvard University, drawing a protest outside Sanders Theater. For two months preceding the concert, several faculty members and a number of activists reached out to Harvard administration to discuss appropriateness of hosting Spivakov's concert at Harvard. Unfortunately, the University completely ignored all attempts at dialogue. Mr. Spivakov's concerts drew protests all over United States and Canada. Unfortunately, among all the protest locations, Harvard University Police distinguished themselves as particularly zealous in enforcing University's apparent anti-Ukrainian stance. In a bizarre development, police officers confiscated any bouquets containing yellow and/or blue flowers (colors of Ukrainian flag), as well as any yellow or blue fliers, from the hands of concert-goers, turning the concert into a political event. HUPD also made it difficult for Professor Lubomyr Hajda, the Associate Director of the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute, to distribute fliers about an upcoming symposium on Crimea. Inside the concert hall, activist and Harvard University alumnus Roman Torgovitsky, Ph.D., staged a peaceful protest at the end of the performance, highlighting Spivakov's political stance and proposing a dialogue. Harvard police arrested Dr. Torgovitsky for allegedly "disorderly conduct" and put no trespass order on him with no expiration date. Although, as evident in video footage, his protest was non-violent and in no way posed a threat to either the performers or the audience, he is now permanently banned from campus. Not surprisingly, the "disorderly conduct" charge against Dr. Torgovitsky was swiftly dismissed by a judge the following morning, and yet Harvard police still plans on enforcing the permanent no-trespass order. This incident has been widely covered in the media in Russia, Ukraine, Canada and US, including in a number of Boston outlets (see below) but, as of today, produced no response from Harvard University Administration and Harvard University Police Department. We call on you to engage in an open dialog on freedom of expression at future events featuring artists supporting Putin's regime, such as D. Matsuev, scheduled to appear at Harvard in June. As part of that process, we call on you to investigate the anti-Ukrainian actions of HUPD and to rescind the order against Dr. Torgovitsky. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Harvard Crimson: Demonstrators Protest Pro-Putin Violinist’s Sanders Performance http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2014/5/11/protesters-violinist-pro-putin/ The Harvard Crimson: Man Protesting Violinist Arrested During Sanders Concert Sunday http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2014/5/14/man-protests-russian-violinist/ Cambridge Day: Conductor Spivakov’s politics draws call for boycott of May Harvard performance http://www.cambridgeday.com/2014/04/14/conductor-spivakovs-politics-draws-call-for-boycott-of-may-harvard-performance/ Cambridge Day: Harvard officer’s account, video disagree on arrest of Russian conductor’s protester http://www.cambridgeday.com/2014/05/14/harvard-officers-account-video-disagree-on-arrest-of-russian-conductors-protester/ Cambridge Day: Harvard treads tragically compromised ground in response to Spivakov protest http://www.cambridgeday.com/2014/05/18/harvard-treads-tragically-compromised-ground-in-response-to-spivakov-protest/

  • NO HOTEL @ 5301 S. STATE STREET, CHICAGO, 60615
On behalf of myself and the undersigned residents of the 3rd Ward and surrounding neighborhoods, I respectfully submit this statement in strong opposition to the proposed zoning change and development at 5300–5321 South State Street, which includes: * A 6-story, 125-unit Hyatt Studio Hotel * A 5-story, 51-unit residential building * 72 off-street parking spaces  Our community’s vibrancy and diversity continue to attract new residents, and we welcome that growth. However, we believe the priority should be the construction of affordable housing and the support of locally viable businesses, not developments that fail to meet the long-term needs of our community. Chicago must do more to uphold and expand the goals of the Affordable Requirements Ordinance by supporting developments that create real housing opportunities for residents. A recent article in the New-Star Newspaper highlighted the sharp decline in student enrollment at DuSable High School, a troubling trend driven largely by the displacement of families and the loss of affordable housing in the area. Our neighborhood cannot thrive without stable housing that supports families and preserves the social fabric of our community.  Please also note: 1. Proximity to Beasley Academic Magnet Center The proposed hotel would sit less than 50 feet from Beasley Academic Center, which serves over 1,000 elementary school students. Beasley is a Magnet School and students reside 10+ miles away. Introducing transient occupancy and increased public access so close to a school raises major safety concerns.   2. Traffic and Congestion The intersections at 53rd & State and 53rd & Wabash are already heavily congested, especially during school hours. Additional traffic from hotel guests, staff, and new residents would further compromise pedestrian and student safety. 3. Hyatt as a Major Hotel Chain Hyatt is a global hospitality brand known for attracting a high volume of travelers. A hotel of this scale brings a significantly greater exchange of people, including out-of-town visitors, commercial guests, and short-term stays—elements not aligned with the quiet, residential character of this community. 4. Lack of Transparency and Community Input Residents were not meaningfully consulted prior to the proposal's advancement. We call for a more open and inclusive process that involves residents in shaping the future of our neighborhood.  5. Long-Term Viability and Accountability The nearby South Loop Hotel, once expected to boost local tourism and revenue, ultimately filed for bankruptcy in 2023C. Without guarantees for long-term success and accountability, the community risks being left with a vacant or underused property. 6. Impact on Neighborhood Quality of Life The presence of a major hotel may lead to increased noise, reduced privacy, changes in street activity, and ultimately a decline in property values—all concerns expressed by nearby homeowners. We believe in a development that reflects the needs, values, and voice of the community. The attached petition, signed by residents, shows that opposition to this project is widespread and grounded in valid concerns about safety, sustainability, and quality of life. We respectfully urge the Chicago Planning Commission, and the Chicago Zoning, Landmark, & Development Committee to reject or pause this proposal until a more transparent, community-aligned plan is presented. Thank you for your time and consideration.   Sincerely, Judith K. Jordan 5308 S. Wabash Ave Chicago, IL 60615 773.620.6261
