Purchase of Gilchrist Blue SpringsDear Sirs: Your council will soon meet to determine the fate of one of Florida’s finest remaining natural resources and a prime example of what our state can boast as a unique treasure. Gilchrist Blue Springs seems made to order for what the people of Florida had in mind when they voted in Amendment 1. This spring is categorized as a second magnitude, just short of a first magnitude producing approximately 40 million gallons of fresh clean water each day, and as such is one of Florida’s major springs. There are 4 large springs and 2 smaller springs on the property, which has multiple buildings and 25 campsites with electric and water. In addition there are 100+ primitive campsites, nature trails, and a long boardwalk to the Santa Fe River. Wildlife is abundant on the property and especially important for two reasons: it boasts ten species of turtles, second only to the Ichetucknee in the Santa Fe basin, and it has a very high populations of snails, one of which, Elimia sp., is important for controlling nuisance algae. The surrounding land totals nearly 400 acres, which would then be protected from development and would further enhance the overall designation of the Santa Fe as an Outstanding Florida Waterway, ecological greenway, and paddling trail. The venue is already a park and has recreational facilities for swimming, camping and picnicking. The availability of the Gilchrist Blue Springs property comes at an opportune moment, when Amendment 1 funds have been assured by law. Our Santa Fe River encourages your council to grasp this opportunity to preserve this beautiful and invaluable part of the pristine Florida for which it is renowned.720 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Shirley Lasseter

President Trump Must Resign ImmediatelyThe blood shed by white racists in Charlottesville, VA on August 12, 2017, is squarely on Trump's hands because of his consistent, unapologetic encouragement of hate-filled, xenophobic white nationalism during his election campaign and by his policies since entering the White House. He is worse than ignorant to blame "both sides" in Charlottesville. He is a coward. The anti-racist protesters were peacefully protesting when a white racist 20-year old "man" drove his SUV into them, killing at least one person and seriously injuring many. This was white racist domestic terrorism, and cowardly Trump refused to call it by its name. He should be forced to resign after his shameful, violence-provoking behavior all this past week, especially after threatening North Korea with "fire and fury". That threat violated the U.N. Charter, which is part of the U.S. Constitution now, due to Article VI of the Constitution, the "Supremacy Clause". So Trump violated his oath of office by threatening North Korea. For inspiring white racist domestic terrorism and violating his oath of office, President Donald J. Trump must be forced to resign immediately.57 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Ed Ciaccio

Gov. Quinn, Don't Frack Us!Gov. Quinn: don't frack us! Say "no" to unenforceable, inadequate fracking regulations. HB2615 will not protect Illinois. The deceptive fracking industry will probably work around many of the regulations when they encounter the feeble enforcement in this state. There are only 12 regulators at the IDNR to oversee thousands of dangerous fracking wells, so enforcement will be next to impossible. And HB2615 has too many gaping holes in it to protect Illinois: No local control, no limits on or prioritization of the use of our precious water, no real air pollution protections, no worker safety. Seismic activity is not even considered, the toxic flowback from the wells will not be handled as hazardous waste, and the setbacks still put our children and families at risk. HB2615 will not protect us from spills, blowouts, water contamination, health effects or possibly even earthquakes. New York State is extending their 5-year moratorium for another 2 years in order to study the dangerous effects of fracking. Illinois residents deserve that same kind of due diligence by their lawmakers and the government. We deserve a moratorium on fracking and an investigative task force, HB3086 and SB1418. Let's not frack our way into a worsening climate crisis. Let's invest in our clean, green, energy future instead of fracking our farmland!139 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Lora Chamberlain

Petition the UFT for a mass meeting to explain the contract's impact on ATRsWe ask you for a mass meeting at UFT headquarters, in the delegate assembly hall, to accommodate all members of the Absent Counselor Reserve (ACRs), the Absent Teacher Reserve (ATRs), other excessed staff or other concerned UFT members, for the purpose of fully airing how the tentative UFT contract will affect excessed staff. The ATR part of the contract is a fundamental violation of due process and tenure. We are troubled that there is an expedited discipline and termination process that applies only to ATRs and not to non-excessed teachers. By agreeing to this expedited process you appear to be conceding to the myth that ATRs are all bad teachers instead of educators caught up in school closings and co-locations. Principal among our concerns, we wish to have a full enumeration of all actions that would constitute "problematic behavior". We are very troubled by your statement, reported in the May 12, 2014 “Wall Street Journal”, that some unnamed panel of hearing officers would solidify the definition of "problematic". How can we be considered as breaking the law if there is no written law or statute? You are trying get people to agree to a contract whose terms are not yet really defined. We expect more of our union president.104 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Manny

New Voting LawsA shift that could change the electoral landscape is underway – the tightening of restrictions on who can vote and how Americans can vote. Going into the 2012 elections, there will be millions of Americans who will find that since 2008, there are new barriers that could prevent them from voting. These new restrictions fall most heavily on young, minority, and low-income voters, as well as on voters with disabilities. This wave of changes may sharply tilt the political terrain for the 2012 election. Already 19 new laws and two new executive actions are in place. At least 42 bills are still pending, and at least 68 more were introduced but failed. Already, it is clear that: SummaryThese new laws could make it significantly harder for more than five million eligible voters to cast ballots in 2012. • The states that have already cut back on voting rights will provide 171 electoral votes in 2012 – 63 percent of the 270 needed to win the presidency. • Of the 12 likely battleground states, as assessed by an August Los Angeles Times analysis of Gallup polling, five have already cut back on voting rights (and may pass additional restrictive legislation), and two more are currently considering new restrictions.3 of 100 SignaturesCreated by PATRICIA VAUGHN
