  • PLEASURE NOT PROFITS! A CALL TO MONITOR AND EVALUATE FEMALE GENITAL COSMETIC PROCEDURES
PLEASURE NOT PROFITS! A CALL TO MONITOR AND EVALUATE FEMALE GENITAL COSMETIC PROCEDURES This petition challenges the dangerous new industry of female genital cosmetic surgery (FGCS), and calls for appropriate oversight. Operations for labia that are allegedly “too big” or “mismatched” may bring big profits, but surgeons are not required to explain real genital diversity or report actual surgical consequences. Without this information, women cannot make an informed choice. Patient testimonials are not information. No professional group in the U.S. tracks labial or clitoral surgeries, so neither the public nor the media knows their extent or how often there are complications. Most surgeons’ websites are loaded with photographs that misinform the public about female genital diversity. The “before” photos in the before-and-after online photo galleries depict a range of genitals as abnormal, but scientific studies show that many different shapes, sizes, and colors are normal. The photo galleries not only misinform, but they increase women’s and girls’ self-consciousness and add to anxiety. Photos may even be photoshopped or retouched. By law, advertisers must have solid evidence for health claims BEFORE they run an ad , yet the Federal Trade Commission has taken no action against the many false and misleading website claims about the alleged sexual benefits of FGCS. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology has not sanctioned members who make misleading claims despite ACOG’s 2007 statement criticizing deception. A full informed consent process for these surgeries should educate women about normal genital diversity and warn about scarring, chronic pain, obstetric risks, loss of genital sensation, reduced erotic pleasure, and post-surgical anxieties. WE CALL ON THE CONSUMER PROTECTION BUREAU OF THE U.S. FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION AND THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY 1. to mandate annual tracking of cosmetic genital surgeries by designated professional groups 2. to issue stronger advisories against misleading online claims and photo galleries 3. to require that surgeons provide full information about genital diversity as part of surgical consent 4. to educate journalists who cover FGCS about these matters Please sign this petition and support our campaign.

  • Sign the people's warrant for Governor Christie's Arrest!
Christie is known to kanoodle with powerful Wall Street interests, especially in the Finance, Insurance and Real Estate industries. During Christie’s 2009 and 2013 campaigns for Governor of New Jersey, he collected $2,175,000 from these industries. These legal, but morally questionable contributions do not include fundraising by Christie for the Republican Governor’s Association. We've listed some of the reasons why Governor Christie should be arrested. Comment when you sign this petition and tell us why you think he should be arrested!

  • Ask the Mayor and Speaker to Pass Single-Use Bag Legislation by Earth Day!
Dear Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Mark-Viverito, I urge you to support Intro 209-2014, which will reduce the use of plastic bags in New York City. The bill requires retail and grocery stores to charge at least 10 cents per single-use carryout bag (paper and plastic) provided to a customer, to encourage New Yorkers to consider refusing a carryout bag when they don't need it or bringing their own reusable bags. Single-use bags are already costing our city. According to the Department of Sanitation, NYC pays $12.5 million to transport 91,000 tons of carryout bags to landfills each year! Plastic bags are designed to be used only for a short period of time, but their negative impacts are long-lasting. Even when properly disposed of, plastic bags often blow away onto the street or into waterways, where they become eye-sores, clog storm drains, and endanger wildlife. New York City should be an environmental leader. Other cities already have similar bag legislation in place and saw single-use bag usage drop by 95 percent. Please support a greener, cleaner New York City. Please support Intro 209-2014.

  • NYU: Designate Election Day as a University Holiday
New York University must show a meaningful commitment to promoting student political engagement on-campus. NYU should be cognizant of the institutional barriers that students face in casting their ballots. GenVote@NYU and our partners urge the NYU administration to support the University Senate Resolution to designate Election Day as a University Holiday.

  • SAVE THE METS
For the past few decades, the Wilpon family has done a poor; if not a horrendous job in managing one of New Yorks favorite teams- The New York Mets. From the Wilpons to Sandy to Hansel Robles, this team is in dire straits and it is time for a change. If you love the Mets along with Gary, Kieth, and Ron, signing this petition is a must. We must raise awareness and call for the Wilpons to sell, Sandy to be fired and Robles to be shipped to Guantanamo Bay- assuring he cannot be called back up to point at home runs. Please help us save the Mets and enter into a golden age, with a new dark knight, Thor, Degrom bringing us multiple World Series Rings. More importantly, save the Mets.

  • Stop defending marriage discrimination in Santa Fe
When Edie Windsor challenged the federal Defense of Marriage Act, President Obama refused to defend it. When Kristin Perry and Sandy Stier challenged California's Prop 8, Governor Brown refused to defend it. Though you called DOMA "toxic" and freely admit that the New Mexico Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, you continue to defend a ban on full marriage equality. New Mexico law is clear: We recognize same-sex marriages from other states and prohibit discrimination on the basis of "sexual orientation" or "gender identity." Please, stand with me on the right side of history, withdraw your Supreme Court petition, and stop defending marriage discrimination in New Mexico.

  • Demand that airlines re-regulate change fees and policies
Airlines should allow at least two weeks after purchase/one week before departure to make any changes to an existing ticket without a change fee, and extend the rebooking to three years in which a previously bought ticket can be re-used. The customer should also have the right to hold the value of the ticket without having to decide on a new departure date and time at the time of cancellation. The value should be entirely applicable to the new ticket, with no limitations as to route and departure date, until three weeks before the three year expiration. It is unreasonable to expect people to cancel and have to decide immediately when they will use or rebook the new ticket or else take a loss an hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

  • Corporations are not people
Corporations currently control the political debate due to the overwhelming amount of money they are able to bring to bear, especially given the Citizens United decision. Since the Citizens United decision was based upon the legal notion that corporations are people, and since corporations are a legal fiction used to codify a social organization, and since that legal fiction is codified in a set of laws and legal traditions, therefore, these laws and traditions can be modified with new laws based upon new findings and circumstances. That new law needs to constrain permissible corporate speech to advocacy of their products and services (advertising), and to illuminating the affects laws and regulations have on their businesses (lobbying), and specifically excluding any speech about particular candidates for office (financing political campaigns).
