We demand Congress make the post office return the mail to the historic post office at 149th and the Grand Concourse in The Bronx. This closure has dramatically degraded mail processing for the people of New York.

We who have signed below are asking that all the veterans who served during the Cold War Period be recognized and be awarded a medal to acknowledge their service to protect and secure the freedom we all hold so deep to our hearts.

TAX AMMO. Guns cannot kill without ammo. The revenue generated by this tax will help pay for health care costs generated by gun violence. It worked for cigarettes; smoking went way down when tobacco was taxed. Let's do the same for gun violence.

There was a time when NM had facilities available especially to help the mentally ill. The doors have closed at most of them and people who require help find it increasingly difficult to receive these services, especially those in crisis. We need funding and support to build and provide more services to the mentally ill and their families.

People who got laid off in 2008-2011 got 99 weeks of unemployment. However, all extensions expire as of Jan 2 - so those who got laid off after June in 2012 only get the regular 26 weeks of unemployment. This petition is asking for government officials to just at least approve a Tier I 6-month extension for those who were laid off in 2012 to give us a fair shot at finding a decent job.

May I suggest an alternative to FEMA trailers for Staten Islanders displaced by Superstorm Sandy? On Staten Island, there are a large number of vacant houses where the owners have effectively abandoned them or the banks can't sell them due to the mortgages being higher than the prices of the houses. Instead of units being empty and thus continuing to artificially raise prices and depress the demand curve, leading to stagnation where properties sit on the market for extended amounts of time, (the true market prices of real estate would have plummeted even further were it not for enforced vacancies and poison-pill properties); the government should commandeer them through Eminent Domain and move displaced persons into them after renovating them to a habitable condition. Staten Island even has an abandoned condo complex which sits empty while large numbers of people need long-term housing! Should this plan be enacted, I believe that the local problems of real estate economics, neighborhood blight, and displaced persons' problems would be solved. Not to mention there is the possibility of the added benefit of job creation. Winter is approaching, and in New York, temporary, makeshift housing offers little protection against the extended period of cold weather. My idea offers solid shelter sooner.

Don’t waste our children’s precious educational time and taxpayer money on state ELA, Math, Social Studies, or Science assessments this year. Standardized tests should be the last thing that New York families have to worry about in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

For future political campaigns,we insist that all published or aired statements are edited beforehand, by a non-partisan fact checking organization. Additionally, the debates should include a fact-checker seated on the stage with the candidates. A loud noise should be used to indicate statements inconsistent with fact, thus enabling the public to be immediately apprised of the truth.
