THE PROBLEM: On May 24th, 2022 in Uvalde, Texas, 19 children and 3 adults were added to the growing death toll due to mass shootings in the United States. As physicians who have spent years in education and training to become experts on how to improve the health of our communities, we cannot stand by idly as these heinous acts of gun violence continue to destroy the physical and mental health of our communities. On the heels of this tragedy, the National Rifle Association (NRA) is scheduled to begin its annual meeting in Houston, a few short hours from Uvalde. We call on the Houston First Corporation, a local government corporation that manages the George R. Brown Convention Center and owns the Hilton Americas-Houston Hotel to cancel this week's annual meeting in an act of solidarity with a nation reeling. Many of us have attended medical society meetings at the George R. Brown Convention Center. If the Houston First Corporation proceeds in hosting the most well-funded gun lobby in the United States two days after another mass shooting of elementary school children, we will boycott this venue for future meetings. BACKGROUND: The United States has a firearm homicide rate 25 times higher than other high-income countries (1). As scientists, we understand the importance of public health research on gun violence and gun violence prevention. Due to lobbying efforts by the NRA since the 1990s, grant funding for this vital work became almost non-existent for over 20 years (2). This organization cripples the efforts of physicians, researchers, public health officials, and many others to save lives. The American public deserves evidence-based measures to curb firearm-related deaths. The NRA must be held to account for its role in this public health crisis. Congress needs to amend Title 38 U.S.C., to allow veterans to have legal representation for appeals for service connected compensation. Time limits and performance standards need to be added to reduce the backlog of claims pending.

The minimum wage should be raised in Illnois. An hourly wage of $10.10, times 40 hours a week, times 52 weeks, works out to an annual income of just $21,008 -- not very much to live on!!

The 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America should be rewritten to specify that the "persons" being granted civil rights are ONLY "natural" or "human" persons. Corporations are to be redefined as the original meaning of "corporate " or "artificial" persons, i.e., corporations are only granted personhood for the purpose of creating legal entities that can form and enter into legally binding contracts. Corporations are specifically NOT granted the same civil rights as human beings, nor are their boards of directors exempted from being held criminally liable for egregious actions leading to the deaths of humans and/or the destruction of property. As long as corporations are granted the possession of "religious conscience," they can also be held liable for punitive damages in civil procedures for the guilt of "malice."

The state of Georgia should not be in the business of promoting Confederate events/activities, holidays, historic sites, and naming roads after racist Confederate leaders who wanted to preserve and expand the institution of slavery. Furthermore, the use of Georgians' tax dollars to fund said activities, particularly the taxes of 3 million Black residents, is immoral and racist.

INVESTIGATE the documented sexism, racism and bully culture of Dameron Hospital Association in Stockton, CA. Any and all whistleblowers have been subject to aggressive litigation and isolation in the community! Stand for cleaning up the Community Hospital for the good of the Community! NON+PROFITS use OUR TAX DOLLARS!!!
