  • Defeat Georgia's Islamophobic HB 3
Tell Governor Deal and the General Assembly that HATE has no place in a modern society! Georgia does not need Jason Spencer (R)'s HB 3 seeking to alter Georgia’s anti-masking law aimed the KKK to include Muslim women. This would make it a misdemeanor for anyone to wear any type of hood or veil — including niqabs or hijabs — while driving and in public spaces. Remember, this could also impact Orthodox Jewish Americans; Catholic Americans; and many Conservative Christians whose faith traditions include head coverings. Stand up for religious freedom NOW!

  • Stand with the Water Protectors of Standing Rock
We, the undersigned voters of New Mexico, urge you to join the 19 members of congress who have signed onto the letter to President Obama urging him to rescind federal permits for the controversial $3.7 billion Dakota Access oil pipeline and embark on a new environmental review of the project. As Rep. Raúl Grijalva of Arizona, the top Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, and other courageous congress people have said, the administration needs to go further than simply pausing construction on a portion of the line to require a new, more thorough environmental review of the full 1,134-mile project and expanded tribal consultations along the full route of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The National Environmental Policy Act requires a full environmental impact statement for major actions that affect the environment. Despite repeated Tribal objections to the pipeline’s route based on clear violations of the National Environmental Protection Act and the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the Army Core of Engineers approved the construction of the pipeline with a capacity of 570,000 barrels of crude oil per day, above the mouth of the Cannonball River and the Missouri River, on the Standing Rock Sioux homelands. The Corps’ approval of the permit allows the oil company to dig the pipeline under the Missouri River just upstream of the reservation and the Tribe’s drinking water supply. An oil spill at this site would constitute an existential threat to the Tribe’s culture and way of life as well as 28 million other people who rely on the Missouri River for their water needs. Over 300 Tribal Nations and tens of thousands of supporters have rallied behind the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe whose treaty rights and water sources are threatened by the pipeline's construction. Peaceful and prayerful water protectors have been violently attacked by private security companies and an increasingly militarized law enforcement presence. As New Mexicans, we know all too well about spills and contamination. There were more than 1,800 spills related to oil and gas production in New Mexico in 2015 alone. Congressman Ben Ray Lujan and Congresswoman Michelle Lujan-Grisham, we call on you to stand with your fellow congresspersons to defend Native rights and protect the water. Please sign the letter to push President Obama to rescind the Dakota Access pipeline construction permits.

  • McDevitt supports Bi-State Compact
I support Congress authorizing a Bi-State Compact between Oregon and Washington because it will establish equal seats at the table for resolving our transportation needs in the region (including Washington, Multnomah and Clackamas counties in Oregon and Klickitat, Skamania, Clark, and Cowlitz counties in Washington State). Clark County alone is expected to grow up to 300,000 people over the next 25 years.

  • Anthony's Act - Providing Those Suffering With Addiction a Real Chance at Recovery
The Affordable Care Act must be amended to provide for a minimum of Ninety (90) days inpatient drug or alcohol treatment up to a maximum of One Hundred Eighty (180) days per year at a facility certified to provide such care by the Secretary of Health of the state in which it is located. Every day in this country 119 people die from drug overdose, and another 6,748 are treated in emergency rooms. That averages out to an overdose related hospitalization every 13 seconds and an overdose death every 13 minutes. Drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death in the United States, outstripping traffic fatalities or gun homicides. And every year it gets worse. In addition to the terrible human toll, substance abuse costs the U.S. economy over $600 billion annually. Effective treatment can dramatically reduce these costs. According to several conservative estimates, every dollar invested in addiction treatment programs yields a return of between $4 and $7 in reduced drug-related crime, criminal justice costs, and theft. When savings related to healthcare are included, total savings can exceed costs by a ratio of 12 to 1. Major savings to the individual and to society also stem from fewer interpersonal conflicts; greater workplace productivity; and fewer drug-related accidents, including overdoses and deaths. My 24-year-old son, Anthony, died May 31, 2014, following a six year battle with opioid and heroin addiction that included three unsuccessful short term treatment programs, each lasting less than 30 days, which was all that insurance would pay for. For most people, this is simply not enough time to recover from the assault addictive drugs make on the body and to restore the life skills that keep a person from relapsing. Research tells us that effective inpatient treatment leads to long term sobriety and fewer relapses. Ninety (90) day residential drug rehab is suggested as the minimum length of time for effective treatment. Anecdotal evidence gathered from post discharge patient interviews suggests that long-term treatment at a drug rehab facility can decrease the risk of drug addiction relapse by up to 73%. That can mean the difference between addiction and recovery—or even life and death. Tell your U.S. Senators and representatives: The Affordable Care Act must be amended to provide for a minimum of Ninety (90) days inpatient drug or alcohol treatment up to a maximum of One Hundred Eighty (180) days per year at a facility certified to provide such care by the Secretary of Health of the state in which it is located.

  • Governor Cuomo: We Demand Action NOW—Appoint Attorney General Eric Schneiderman via Executive Ord...
Many New Yorkers have felt angry, sorrowful and powerless since the ruling of no indictment in the case of the choking death of Eric Garner at the hands of a New York City Police Officer. This ruling, along with other recent national events, has raised serious questions about the ability of district attorneys to remain impartial when investigating police misconduct. It’s crucial that New York has a separate prosecutor, with no connection to local police departments, to investigate cases of alleged police misconduct. We do not have to feel powerless. There IS a way to address this injustice. Please sign this petition so we can deliver it to Governor Cuomo’s office and demand impartial investigations led by the Attorney General. Subdivision two of Executive Law section 63 currently authorizes Governor Cuomo to supersede any local district attorney on any criminal matter as he deems appropriate by appointing the Attorney General to investigate and prosecute the case. Help us communicate to Governor Cuomo that we, the people, want to see this necessary change happen immediately. Governor Cuomo, we the people ask that you immediately issue an interim executive order directing the Office of the Attorney General to investigate and, if necessary, prosecute cases involving unarmed civilians killed by police officers. In light of the recent events and deaths, we need to restore public confidence and initiate change so that justice is served for our families from this day on. Signed, Kevin Powell (BK Nation), Beverly Bond (Black Girls Rock), Laura Dawn (ART NOT WAR), Daron Murphy (ART NOT WAR)

  • The Firearms Bureau (ATF) needs a Director
In our society, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) functions as the FDA of guns. For this reason, pro-NRA politicians have always been hostile to the ATF, a law enforcement agency of the US Dept. of Justice. In 2006, Congress decided that the position of Director of the ATF must henceforth require Senate confirmation. They have since refused to confirm anyone. Having a full time Director is the only way the agency can effectively enforce the common sense gun laws already on the books. And it is the first step to decreasing the gun violence across the US. Demand that Congress confirm President Obama's nominee for Director of ATF.
