  • Protect Our Students! Delay Aspen implementation!
The Chicago Board of Educations claims that its schools are sanctuary schools. Nonetheless, CPS has signed a contract with Follett, a nationwide corporation with numerous school district contracts, to use their Aspen Student Information System to track various aspects of student attendance, scheduling, performance and personal information such as health records and country of citizenship, country of immigration, and U.S. citizenship status. We are deeply troubled that these descriptors exist. We want to know why this information is being collected, who will have access to it and who may obtain this data whether purposefully or incidentally. This concern is especially pressing given the security breaches CPS has experienced in the recent past. As educators, our most important responsibility is to maintain a safe and secure environment for our students so that they can learn. This is more important than ever at a time when immigrant families are being criminalized and torn apart and immigrant children are being caged like animals, when youth are attacked by police, and when a wall is being constructed to separate human beings. We cannot allow our students or their families to be threatened. We demand that CPS ensure the safety of our students and their families by having those identifiers permanently removed before CPS transitions to the Aspen Student Information System. CPS is planning to implement this change effective January 7, 2019, so this is urgent. We demand that CPS postpone implementation of Aspen until these issues are resolved.

III) Tax Fossil Fuels, End Subsidies, and Fund a Universal Basic Income: The bill amends the internal Revenue Code to: (1) tax all imported fossil fuels at a rate of 100 USD per tonne of carbon, with the price increasing at 5% per annum; (2) tax all domestically produced fossil fuels at the point of extraction at 80 USD per tonne of carbon, with the price increasing at 5% per annum; (3) establish a 'Universal Basic Income" account to receive all fossil fuel tax funds, (4) disburse evenly to every U.S. citizen at least annually all collected fossil fuel taxes collected. (5) terminate specified fossil fuel subsidies, (6) permanently extend renewable electricity production tax credits for electricity generated from solar and wind,\; and (7) permanently extend a business energy investment tax credit for solar or wind energy technologies. • Let’s Have Some Backbone at the SEC
The Securities and Exchange Commission has a crucial role to play in restraining Wall Street recklessness and standing up for investors and the integrity of the financial markets. Unfortunately, it has not been doing its job very well. One big reason: a habit of nominating “revolving door” corporate and Wall Street insiders to serve as SEC Commissioners. With two vacancies coming up, we urge you to find nominees who will stand up for Main Street instead of Wall Street. Too many past SEC commissioners have proved to be overly protective of the short-term interests of the financial industry. We need commissioners with a track record of opposition to Wall Street excess and support for tough rules and enforcement.
