Dear Ms. Edkins, The news coming out of Liberia is troubling. I understand that you hold shares in the Asian agribusiness firm Golden-Agri Resources (GAR). Several years ago, GAR established a policy to eliminate deforestation and exploitation from its operations, including “all upstream and downstream palm oil operations that we own, manage or invest in, regardless of the stake.” However, despite GAR’s commitment, it has been increasingly clear that GAR’s investment in Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL) has led to great environmental destruction and human rights violations. An investigation conducted by Friends of the Earth has found that GVL is responsible for clearing dense forests, including chimpanzee habitat, without the consent of local communities. Furthermore, a 2018 RSPO Complaints Panel decision affirmed ongoing violations by GVL, including the failure of the company to implement adequate free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) procedures, destruction of sacred sites, coercion and intimidation of community members to sign agreements with the company, and continued development of disputed land. As one of the world’s most reputable investment firms, it is reasonable to expect that your investment approach complies with international business frameworks such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the OECD Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct. You have a fiduciary responsibility to ensure that your investments are not destroying high-carbon stock forests, dispossessing communities of their traditional lands, and contributing to greater impoverishment –- all of which contribute to operational, reputational, and legal risks. I therefore urge you to use your leverage to engage with GAR and urge the company to suspend its Liberian operations until GVL comes into full compliance with international business norms, including the recent recommendations of the RSPO Complaints Panel. If GAR continues to disregard international norms, Liberian national laws, and its own company policies, you should recognize the risks associated with this company, and seek to eliminate your exposure to GAR. By creating a "Trick or Treat Day" that falls on the last Saturday of October, more children (and adults!) can enjoy visiting neighbors and not have the worries of staying up or being out too late on a school/work evening. This does not affect the religious celebrations of Halloween that will remain on the 31st.

Hold immediate hearings to change the current patent laws which allow a seventeen year period for a cancer drug monopoly to a shorter number of years. Reduce the period to seven and or when the drug company re-coupes the cost of development and a has return on investment consistent with other non cancer drug products. Furthermore change the law so that sucessfull cancer drugs are not renewable with minor changes to the chemistry which show no beneficial improvement.

El Garden, at 120 Jefferson Street, is a new community garden opened in April 2014. In addition to successfully developing communal gardening (no private garden beds!), El Garden is home to growing community of local residents working to create a dynamic, accessible public green space. After less than a year, the city has already identified the site for possible development and we need your help to keep this space for public use. By developing this land, we will lose an extremely important asset to the community: a place where neighbors old and new learn and teach each other how to grow healthy food, develop knowledge and appreciation of the natural world, spend time just sitting or attending free cultural events, and offering free resources to Bushwick’s larger community (such as trees, food and soil). El Garden has been a home for projects that have positive impacts in our community. Each Sunday our garden hosts BK ROT, a local composting service that processes up to 2 tons of food waste into usable compost each month and employs local youth at fair wages carry out this work. Additionally the garden hosted the Green Guerrillas summer urban agriculture program in 2014, hosted an extremely successful NYRP Tree Giveaway (a part of the city's Million Trees Initiative), participated in the World Book Night book giveaway, and was a recipient of a Citizen's Committee Grant. Lastly, the garden has offered space for artists to showcase their works, including a piece by artist Kurt Steger.
