  • Dissolvement of a broken system
    I would like to start this petition off with some quote from a few very important people to the foundation of this nation. “However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.” GEORGE WASHINGTON, Farewell Address, Sep. 17, 1796 Now, I Know these next quote are not against political party, but I believe that the fears in them can be felt in how parties in our country have and are acting. James Madison argues in the Federalist that the only problem comes from majority factions because the principle of popular sovereignty should prevent minority factions from gaining power. Madison offers two ways to check majority factions: prevent the "existence of the same passion or interest in a majority at the same time" or render a majority faction unable to act. Madison concludes that a small democracy cannot avoid the dangers of majority faction because small size means that undesirable passions can very easily spread to a majority of the people, which can then enact its will through the democratic government without difficulty. Federalist No. 10 James Madison “The founders intentionally created a Republic and not a democracy to weaken the tyranny of the majority over the individual. Then they separated powers among three seperate branches of government.” The Federalist on the tyranny of the majority, Alexis de Tocqueville. I believe it to be self-evident that these fears that the founders had direct and pointed out by Tocqueville have come to fruition, but not in the form of the common man coming together to strip the right and freedoms of the minorities. Instead in the form of the fall of the Roman Republic and that is death by the party (political parties). Like with the squabbling between the optimates and Populares we are head quickly to an impasse that must be avoided. So, I would to propose and idea that I wish to be brought to both houses of the legislative branch and that is we need to fully dissolve and ban political party. I would also propose that a two term limit should be place on the houses as it has become self-evident that the want/need to be reelected has in recent history put United States Representative in a position to put external variable ahead of the people and/or the nation. With this stated, I believe these action are justified in this insert from the Declaration of Independence. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness”.   • Santa Cruz City Council: Defund the Police, Refund our Communities!
    To Mayor Cummings and Santa Cruz Council members, We, the undersigned, are demanding true racial and economic justice for people of color (POC) and working class communities, not more performative gestures. For many centuries, our country’s police system has been responsible for the many senseless acts of violence and oppression of marginalized peoples. The police system was born out of slave patrol and suppressing worker movements and continues to do so to this day, in many different ways. When we say #blacklivesmatter, we are talking about putting an end to systemic racism and inequality once and for all. No more Breonna Taylors. No more George Floyds. We want to see a future where we are funding services and providing resources for our marginalized communities, not policing them because of the lack thereof. This cannot be done with an over-inflated police budget. We are calling on you to defund the Santa Cruz Police Department and instead divert funding to programs that will truly keep POC safe, lift marginalized communities into healthy lives, and keep them out of the situations that have been forced on them due to poverty and inequality. Our City spent a third of its budget on the Police in the last fiscal year, while working class people and POC continue to struggle to keep a roof over their heads. Over 70% of crimes reported were property theft in 2019. When members of our community cannot maintain their homes or are in dire economic hardship, they are forced to do whatever it takes to survive. Our city cannot police itself out of economic inequality. Instead of spending money on policing poverty, we should be looking towards compassionate and restorative solutions that get at the root cause of the problem. Our city council could instead be investing in truly affordable housing projects and economic relief for both working-class families and homeless people. As we’ve seen across the country, police interactions with communities of color and those with mental disorders often result in violence or worse, death. And solutions like body cams or racial bias training have not been effective. Cities across the country have tried police reforms to minimize violent interactions with little to no success. Instead of spending so much city resources responding to petty crimes of which police are ill-equipped to handle, we could be sending crisis intervention specialists like those from CAHOOTS in Eugene, Oregon. CAHOOTS send a trained mental health crisis counsellor and EMT to respond to non-violent and non-life-threatening calls, providing resources to those who may need it when they arrive. This approach is a much more compassionate and cost-effective way to respond to those who need help, not someone carrying lethal weapons. We hope that you will do the right thing and not just take into consideration our demands but also make real steps to achieving these meaningful, systemic changes.   • Remove the Racist John R. Monaghan Statue from Downtown Spokane, WA
    Dear Spokane City Council Members, We would like to begin by thanking the City Council and the Plan Commission for the important work done last fall to re-name Ft. George Wright Drive to Whistalks Way. While some argue such changes are merely symbolic and lack impact, the decision to cease commemorating a historical figure responsible for genocide is a significant step in healing for those communities who still, generations later, have been affected by the aftermath of their brutality. It is in this same vein that we, the undersigned individuals, urge you to remove another Spokane monument that continues to perpetuate racism and inflict pain upon members of our community: the John R. Monaghan statue. At first glance, the statue, which belongs to the city and is located opposite the Spokane Club, appears as nothing other than a prominent memorial to a fallen war hero. “During the retreat of the allied forces from the deadly fire and overwhelming number of the savage foe,” the inscription reads, “[Ensign John R. Monaghan] stood the fearful onslaught and sacrificed his life defending a wounded comrade Lieutenant Philip V. Lansdale United States Navy.” Although most who pass by the statue are unlikely to know who Monaghan was, or what battle he fought in, it is known around the world to the Pacific Islander community as a devastating reminder of the thousands of innocent men, women, and children whom were brutally murdered. It stands as a monument to the unprovoked, antagonistic, colonial attacks by the United States on Sāmoa and Sāmoan civilians, and to the racist perceptions that Americans had of them at that time. The impacts have been deep and lasting. In 1899, when the United States was aggressively conquering the native lands of foreign people to extend U.S. influence, the U.S. Navy received orders to attack Sāmoa in an effort to install a ruler favorable to the United States. The USS Philadelphia shelled Sāmoan villages, targeting and killing civilian populations, including women and children. An eyewitness to one of these bombardments reported “shells bursting everywhere; the cries of the bedridden and the helplessly wounded burning alive in their blazing houses ... mangled children crawling on the sands.” Ensign John R. Monaghan, who hailed from the Spokane area, was among the U.S. officers and sailors who went ashore to burn villages – a fact that is overshadowed by the statue’s depiction of him as a martyr and a hero. The Monaghan statue and its pediment are problematic for three important reasons. First, they commemorate a war that was not honorable, and that caused pain and destruction of Sāmoan communities. Second, the bas-relief pediment on the statue uses degrading language, perpetuates racist stereotypes, and misrepresents Sāmoan defenders of their land, homes, and resources. Lastly, they serve as a constant reminder of a painful past and thus continue to inflict harm and cause pain to the Sāmoan and the larger Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities of Spokane, which includes the second largest Marshallese population in the nation. As Spokane media in the past few years demonstrates, this monument continues to serve to this day as a rallying point for anti-Sāmoan racism. Perhaps the statue was a source of pride for Spokane citizens when it was erected in 1906, a physical reminder of the U.S.’s superiority over “the savage horde,” as Governor Mead referred to Sāmoans during the dedication ceremony. But the racist and ignorant perceptions that went virtually unquestioned during that era should not be allowed to represent Spokane today, 115 years later. We must not continue to pay homage to unjust wars, people who carry them out, and racist, colonial beliefs that lead to them. In solidarity with our Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander community members, we call for the immediate removal of the statue and the pediment, and we ask, with deep humility, for the full support of the Spokane City Council in these efforts as we move closer toward reconciliation and healing together.
