Sen. Murkowski: vote NO on the nuclear option
Please don't destroy decades of Senate precedent by voting for the nuclear option and allowing a simple majority vote to approve a Supreme Court nominee. The 60 vote threshold for such an appointment is an essential element of our system of checks and balances.
Why is this important?
For decades, a Supreme Court nominee had to get 60 votes in the US Senate to be confirmed. This ensured that the nominee appealed to a consensus of Senators from both parties. On Friday, the Republican Senate majority will vote on changing the rules so only a simple majority can confirm Trump's nominee, further politicizing the Court. We need to petition our Senators not to take this unprecedented step.
