Why is this important?
As the dairy industry’s profits plummet, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand plans to send millions of dollars in federal funding to failing dairy farms with her newly introduced Dairy Premium Refund Act. This industry subsidy initiative has arisen after previous industry insurance programs have failed.
Dairy, however, is a cruel and unsustainable industry, which is not only abusive to animals, but is also unhealthy for both humans and the planet.
The financial decline of the dairy industry is evidence that we should not support or fund it with our tax dollars. Rather, it is indicative that consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the unhealthy and abusive practices inherent to dairy products and its production.
